Camshaft Replacement

Front
1. Make sure you have the anti-theft codes for the audio unit (and navigation code if equipped), then write down the audio presets.
2. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery first, then disconnect the positive cable.
3. Remove the battery.
4. Drain the engine coolant.
5. Remove the upper radiator hose.

6. Remove the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve.
7. Remove the timing belt.
8. Remove the rocker arm assembly.
9. Remove the front camshaft pulley.
10. Remove the thrust cover (A), then remove the front camshaft (B).

11. Install the front camshaft in the reverse order of removal with a new O-ring (C). Apply new engine oil to the journals and cam lobes.
12. Apply new engine oil to the threads of the camshaft pulley mounting bolt, then install the front camshaft pulley.
13. Install the rocker arm assembly, then tighten the mounting bolts.
14. Install the timing belt.
15. Adjust the valve clearance.
16. Install the upper radiator hose.
17. Install the battery. Clean the battery posts and cable terminals with sandpaper, then assemble them and apply grease to prevent corrosion.
18. Fill the radiator with engine coolant and bleed the air out from the system.
19. Do the crankshaft position (CKP) pattern clear/CKP pattern learn procedure.
20. Enter the anti-theft codes for the audio unit (and navigation code if equipped), then enter the audio presets.
21. Set the clock.

Rear
1. Relieve the fuel pressure.
2. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
3. Remove the intake manifold.
4. Remove the quick-connect fitting cover (A), then disconnect the fuel feed hose (B).

5. Remove the brake lines from the master cylinder.
6. Remove the timing belt.
7. Remove the rocker arm assembly.
8. Remove the rear camshaft pulley.
9. Remove the thrust cover (A), then remove the camshaft (B).

10. Install the camshaft in the reverse order of removal. Always use a new O-ring (C). Apply new engine oil to the journals and cam lobes.
11. Remove all of the old liquid gasket from the rocker shaft holder and cylinder head.
12. Apply liquid gasket, P/N 08717-0004, 08718-0001, 08718-0002, 08718-0003, or 08718-0009, evenly to the camshaft holder mating surface of the cylinder head.

NOTE: Do not install components if too much time has passed after applying the liquid gasket (for P/N 08718-0002, no more than 4 minutes, for all others, no more than 5 minutes). Instead, remove the old residue and reapply the liquid gasket.

13. Apply new engine oil to the threads of the camshaft pulley mounting bolt, then install the rear camshaft pulley.
14. Install the rocker arm assembly, then tighten the mounting bolts.
15. Install the timing belt.
16. Adjust the valve clearance.
17. Install the brake lines and do the brake system bleeding procedure.
18. Connect the fuel feed hose, then install the quick-connect fitting cover.
19. Install the intake manifold.
20. Install the air cleaner assembly.
21. Inspect for fuel leaks. Turn the ignition switch ON (II) (do not operate the starter) so the fuel pump runs for about 2 seconds and pressurizes the fuel line. Repeat this operation two or three times, then check for fuel leakage at any point in the fuel line.
22. Do the crankshaft position (CKP) pattern clear/CKP pattern learn, procedure.
