REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Align the front wheels straight ahead. Make sure you have recorded the anti-theft codes for the audio system and the navigation system (if equipped). Then disconnect the negative cable from the battery, and wait at least 3 minutes before beginning work.
2. Remove the driver's airbag from the steering wheel by removing the access panel from the steering wheel, then disconnecting the driver's airbag 4P connector from the cable reel.
3. Using a TORX T30 bit, remove the two TORX bolts.
4. Disconnect the horn switch connector, radio remote switch connector, and the cruise control set/decel, resume/accel, cancel switch connector.
5. Remove the steering wheel nut.
6. Remove the steering wheel. Use a steering wheel puller, if needed.
NOTE:
^ Do not tap on the steering wheel or steering column when removing the steering wheel.
^ If you turn the puller bolts into the wheel hub more than five threads deep, the bolts will hit the cable reel and damage it. To prevent this, install a pair of jam nuts five threads up on each puller bolt.
7. Remove the dashboard lower cover.
8. Remove the column cover screws, then remove the column covers.
9. Disconnect the dashboard wire harness A 4P connector from the cable reel.
10. Disconnect the dashboard wire harness B 5P connector, and release the tab, then pull off the cable reel.
11. Remove the three mounting screws securing the switch body to the steering column, then remove the switch body.
12. Transfer the combination light switch and the wiper / washer switch to the new switch body.
13. Install the new switch body using the three screws.
14. Set the turn signal canceling sleeve so the projections are aligned vertically.
15. Carefully install the cable reel on the combination switch. Then connect the 5P connector and 4P connector.
16. Install the steering wheel column covers.
17. If needed, center the cable reel. Do this by first rotating the cable reel clockwise until it stops. Then rotate it counterclockwise about 2-1/2 turns until the arrow mark on the cable reel points straight up.
18. Align the projections on the cable reel with the holes on the steering wheel. Install the steering wheel, and secure the steering wheel nut. Make sure the steering wheel is centered.
19. Reconnect the horn switch connector, radio remote switch connector, and the cruise control set/decel, resume/accel, cancel switch connector.
20. Install the driver's airbag, and secure it with new TORX bolts.
21. Connect the cable reel to the driver's airbag 4P connector, then install the access panel on the steering wheel.
22. Reconnect the negative cable to the battery.
23. Confirm proper operation of the following items, including the cable reel:
^ Turn the ignition switch to ON (II). The SRS indicator should come on for about 6 seconds and then go off.
^ After the SRS indicator goes off, turn the steering wheel fully left and right to confirm the SRS indicator does not come on.
^ Make sure the horn works.
^ Make sure the cruise control buttons work.
^ Make sure the steering wheel audio controls work.
^ Make sure you have re-entered the anti-theft codes for the audio system and for the navigation system (if equipped).
