DIAGNOSIS
1. Remove the intake manifold:
NOTE:
To save time, don't remove and plug the water (coolant) bypass hoses. Instead, unbolt the throttle body and move it to the side.
^ Refer to page 9-4 of the 2OO~2OO8 Pilot Service Manual, or
^ Online, enter keyword MANIFOLD, and select Intake Manifold Removal and Installation from the list.
2. Remove all the ignition coils:
^ Refer to page 4-19 of the service manual, or
^ Online, enter keyword COIL, and select Ignition oil Removal/Installation from the list.
3. Remove all the spark plugs:
^ Refer to page 4-22 of the service manual, or
^ Online, enter keyword SPARK, and select Spark Plug Inspection from the list.
4. Remove the rear cylinder head cover:
^ Refer to page 6-83 of the service manual, or
^ Online, enter keyword CYLINDER, and select Cylinder Head Cover Removal (J35Z1) from the list.
5. Attach a 19 mm wrench to the power steering pulley nut. Rotate the engine clockwise with the wrench until each rear bank cylinder goes past top dead center (TDC). (This takes several complete engine revolutions.) While turning the engine, check to see if the intake and exhaust rocker arms are opening and closing the valves at each cylinder.
^ If all the intake and exhaust rocker arms are opening and closing the valves, go to step 6.
^ If any of the intake or exhaust rocker arms are not opening and closing the valves, go to REPAIR PROCEDURE.
6. Screw the VCS air regulator adapter, hand tight, into the port on the right side of the rocker arm bridge.
7. Connect the VCM air regulator to the adapter and to shop air. Adjust the regulator to 50 psi.
*8. Rotate the engine the same as in step 5.
^ If all the intake and exhaust rocker arms are opening and closing the valves, remove the regulator adapter, then go to REPAIR PROCEDURE.
^ If any of the intake or exhaust rocker arms are not opening and closing the valves, continue with the normal troubleshooting to find the cause of the noise.*
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Remove the 10 mounting bolts securing the rocker shaft bridge to the cylinder head.
2. Remove the two bolts securing the rocker shaft holder to the cylinder head.
3. Lift the rocker shaft bridge and holder off the cylinder head, and place it upside down on a clean work area. Separate the holder from the bridge, and set the holder to the side.
4. Carefully slide the intake rocker shaft out of the bridge, and place the shaft on the work area facing the same direction you removed it.
NOTE:
The 10 rocker shaft mounting bolts cannot be reinstalled unless you reinstall each shaft in the same direction and angle it is removed.
5. Remove the rocker arms from the bridge. The rocker arms will not be reused.
6. Using the instructions in steps 4 and 5, remove the exhaust rocker shaft and the exhaust rocker arms.
7. Remove and retain the lost motion springs from the rocker shaft bridge. There are nine springs (three intake and six exhaust).
NOTE:
Do not remove the spring circlips from the bridge.
8. Thoroughly clean the intake and exhaust rocker shafts and the rocker shaft bridge with solvent. Dry the parts with compressed air.
9. Remove and discard the metal retainer and the plastic shaft protector from the new rocker arms.
10. Apply fresh engine oil to the new rocker arms and to the intake and exhaust rocker shafts.
11. Reinstall the lost motion springs into the bridge. Make sure the capped end of each spring faces inward.
12. Slide each new intake rocker arm onto the rocker shaft bridge. Make sure the tappet side of each arm faces up.
13. Carefully slide the intake shaft into the bridge and through each rocker arm. You may need to move the arms up or down to allow the shaft to slide in.
NOTE:
To avoid binding or damaging the arms, do not force the shaft into the bridge.
14. Using the instructions in steps 12 and 13, install the new exhaust rocker arms and the exhaust rocker shaft.
15. Line up the rocker shafts with their oil passages facing inward.
16. Insert the four corner mounting bolts into the bridge, one at each rocker shaft end. If needed, slightly turn the shafts to allow the bolts to slide in.
NOTE:
Don't force the bolts. If a bolt won't slide in, the shaft may not be aligned, or it may be installed backward. The shafts are machined to allow the bolts to easily pass through them.
17. Clean off any sealer residue and oil from the rocker shaft holder. Also make sure the holder's mating surface on the cylinder head is clean.
18. Apply Hondabond HT to the sealing surfaces between the rocker shaft holder and the cylinder head. Then slide the holder onto the end of the bridge, and allow a few minutes for the Hondabond to set.
19. Place the rocker shaft bridge and holder on the cylinder head. With its dowel pins aligned to the head, press down on the bridge, and hand-tighten its four corner mounting bolts. Then hand-tighten the six remaining mounting bolts and the two rocker shaft holder mounting bolts.
20. Tighten the rocker shaft bridge and rocker shaft holder mounting bolts, two turns at a time, in the numbered sequence shown below. The final torque for each bolt is 24 Nm (17 lb.ft).
21. Adjust the valve clearances:
^ Refer to page 6-64 of the service manual, or
^ Online, enter keyword CLEAR, and select Valve Clearance Adjustment (J35Z1) from the list.
22. Reinstall the rear cylinder head cover, the spark plugs, the ignition coils, the intake manifold, and the throttle body. Refer to the appropriate service manual pages or online locations listed at the beginning of this bulletin.
NOTE:
When you reinstall the throttle body, use a new gasket.
23. Start the engine, and make sure there are no fluid leaks.
24. Turn off the engine, and check the engine oil level.
