DIAGNOSIS
1. Make sure the ambient temperature is below 50°F and the engine is cold. Start the engine.
Does the engine make a louder than normal whine?
Yes - Turn off the engine, then go to step 2.
No - This bulletin does not apply.
2. With the engine still cold, remove the drive belt, then start the engine, and run it briefly while listening for the noise.
NOTE:
Do not run the engine for very long, because the water pump and the alternator are not operating.
^ If you still hear the noise, reinstall the drive belt, then go to REPAIR PROCEDURE.
^ If you don't hear the noise, reinstall the drive belt, then continue with normal troubleshooting.
NOTE:
A certain level of whine from the power steering pump is normal. Replacing the power steering pump will not change this noise.
