Cylinder Head Removal
NOTE:
- Use fender covers to avoid damaging the painted surfaces.
- To avoid damaging the wiring and terminals, unplug the wiring connectors carefully while holding the connector portion.
- Connect the Honda Diagnostic System (HDS) to the data link connector (DLC), and monitor the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor 1. To avoid damaging the cylinder head, wait until the engine coolant temperature drops below 100 °F (38 °C) before loosening the cylinder head bolts.
- Mark all wiring and hoses to avoid misconnection. Also, be sure that they do not contact other wiring or hoses, or interfere with other parts.
1. Relieve the fuel pressure. Service and Repair
2. Do the battery terminal disconnection procedure. Procedures
3. Drain the engine coolant. Service and Repair
4. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Service and Repair
5. Remove the drive belt. Drive Belt Removal/Installation
6. Remove the intake manifold. Service and Repair
7. Remove the harness clamps (A), and disconnect the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) hose from the clamp (B).
8. Remove the air cleaner bracket (A), then remove the harness holder (B) from the cylinder head.
9. M/T model: Disconnect the upper radiator hose (A) and the heater hose (B).
10. A/T model: Disconnect the upper radiator hose (A), the heater hose (B), and the water bypass hose (C).
11. Disconnect the following engine wire harness connectors, and remove the wire harness clamps from the cylinder head:
- Four fuel injector connectors
- Engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor 1 connector
- Air fuel ratio (A/F) sensor connector
- Secondary heated oxygen sensor (secondary HO2S) connector
- Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve connector
- Rocker arm oil control valve connector
- Rocker arm oil pressure sensor (EOP sensor) connector
- EVAP canister purge valve connector
- Camshaft position (CMP) sensor connector
12. Remove the four ignition coils. Service and Repair
13. Remove the three way catalytic converter (TWC). Service and Repair
14. Remove the thermostat housing. Service and Repair
15. Remove the cam chain. Cam Chain Removal
16. Remove the cylinder head bolts. To prevent warpage, loosen the bolts, in sequence, 1/3 turn at a time. Repeat the sequence until all bolts are loosened.
17. Remove the cylinder head.
