Cylinder Head Removal
Cylinder Head Removal
NOTE:
- Use fender covers to avoid damaging the painted surfaces.
- To avoid damaging the wires and terminals, unplug the wiring connectors carefully while holding the connector portion.
- Connect the Honda Diagnostic System (HDS) to the data link connector (DLC), and monitor the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor 1. To avoid damaging the cylinder head, wait until the engine coolant temperature drops below 100 °F (38 °C) before loosening the cylinder head bolts.
- Mark all wiring and hoses to avoid misconnection. Also, be sure that they do not contact other wiring or hoses, or interfere with other parts.
1. Relieve the fuel pressure. Service and Repair
2. Drain the engine coolant. Service and Repair
3. Remove the drive belt. Service and Repair
4. Disconnect the mass air flow (MAF) sensor/intake air temperature (IAT) sensor connector (A).
5. Disconnect the vacuum hose (B) and the breather pipe (C), then remove the intake air duct (D).
6. Remove the quick-connect fitting cover (A), then disconnect the fuel feed hose (B). Fuel Line/Quick-Connect Fitting Removal
7. Remove the bolt securing the connecting pipe support bracket from the engine block.
8. Disconnect the evaporative emission (EVAP) canister hose (A) and the brake booster vacuum hose (B).
9. Remove the intake manifold. Service and Repair
10. Remove the exhaust manifold. Service and Repair
11. Disconnect the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) hose (A), and remove the ground cable (B).
12. Disconnect the upper radiator hose (A), the heater hoses (B), and the water bypass hose (C).
13. Disconnect the engine wire harness connectors, and remove the wire harness clamps from the cylinder head:
- Four injector connectors
- Engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor 1 connector
- Camshaft position (CMP) sensor A connector (Intake side)
- Camshaft position (CMP) sensor B connector (Exhaust side)
- Rocker arm oil control solenoid (VTEC solenoid valve) connector
- Rocker arm oil pressure switch (VTEC oil pressure switch) connector
14. Remove the three bolts (A) securing the EVAP canister purge valve bracket and remove the two bolts (B) securing the harness bracket.
15. Remove the cam chain. Cam Chain Removal
16. Remove the rocker arm assembly. Rocker Arm Assembly Removal
17. Remove the cylinder head bolts. To prevent warpage, loosen the bolts in sequence 1/3 turn at a time; repeat the sequence until all bolts are loosened.
18. Remove the cylinder head.
