Engine Removal




Engine Removal

Special Tools Required

- Engine hanger adapter VSB02C000015*
- Engine support hanger, A and Reds AAR-T1256*
- Front subframe adapter VSB02C000016*
- Universal lifting eyelet 07AAK-SNAA120
*: These special tools are available through the Honda Tool and Equipment Program.

NOTE:

- Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces.

- To avoid damaging the wires and terminals, unplug the wiring connectors carefully while holding the connector portion.

- Mark all wiring and hoses to avoid misconnection. Also, be sure that they do not contact other wiring or hoses, or interfere with other parts.

1. Remove the hood.

2. Relieve the fuel pressure. Service and Repair

3. Disconnect the mass air flow (MAF) sensor/intake air temperature (IAT) sensor connector (A).

4. Disconnect the vacuum hose (B) and breather pipe (C), then remove the intake air duct (D).

5. Do the battery removal procedure. Removal and Replacement

6. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Service and Repair






7. Remove the harness clamps (A).

8. Remove the four bolts (B), and loosen the bolt (C) securing the battery base, then remove the battery base (D).






9. Remove the positive (+) terminals (A) and the harness clamps (B) from the under-hood fuse/relay box.






10. Remove the under-hood fuse/relay box from the bracket, then remove the ground cable (C).

11. Remove the quick-connect fitting cover (A), then disconnect the fuel feed hose (B). Fuel Line/Quick-Connect Fitting Removal






12. Disconnect the evaporative emission (EVAP) canister hose (A) and the brake booster vacuum hose (B).






13. Remove the bolt (A), then disconnect the engine control module (ECM)/powertrain control module (PCM) connectors (B) and the ECM/PCM wire harness connector (C).






14. Remove the harness clamps (A), and the grommet (B), and disconnect the accelerator pedal position (APP) sensor connector (C), then pull the engine wire harness through the bulkhead.

15. M/T model: Remove the clutch slave cylinder and the clutch line bracket mounting bolt. Manual Transmission Removal

16. M/T model: Remove the shift cables. Do not bend the shift cable excessively. Manual Transmission Removal

17. Remove the drive belt. Service and Repair






18. Remove the receiver line from the clamps (A).






19. Remove the power steering (P/S) pump (A) without disconnecting the P/S hoses from the pump.

20. Remove the P/S hose from the bracket on the cylinder head cover.

21. Wait until the engine is cool, then carefully remove the radiator cap.

22. Raise the vehicle on the lift.

23. Remove the front wheels.






24. Remove the splash shield.

25. Loosen the drain plug in the radiator, and drain the engine coolant. Service and Repair

26. Drain the transmission fluid:
- Manual transmission MTF Inspection and Replacement

- Automatic transmission ATF Replacement

27. Drain the engine oil. Service and Repair






28. Disconnect the air fuel ratio (A/F) sensor connector (A) and the secondary heated oxygen sensor (secondary HO2S) connector (B), then remove the three way catalytic converter (TWC) assembly (C).

29. Disconnect the stabilizer links. Front Stabilizer Link Removal/Installation

30. Disconnect the suspension knuckle ball joints. Front Lower Arm Replacement

31. Remove the driveshafts. Front Driveshaft Removal Coat all precision-finished surfaces with new engine oil. Tie a plastic bag over the driveshaft ends.

32. A/T model: Remove the shift cable. Do not bend the shift cable excessively. Automatic Transmission Removal

33. 4WD model: Remove the propeller shaft from the transfer assembly:
- Manual transmission M/T Transfer Assembly Removal (M/T)

- Automatic transmission Automatic Transmission Removal

34. Lower the vehicle on the lift.






35. A/T model: Disconnect the automatic transmission fluid (ATF) cooler hoses (A) and remove the ATF filter mounting bolt (B).






36. Disconnect the upper radiator hose (A) and the heater hoses (B).






37. Clean any dirt off the quick connector (A), the thermostat cover, and the lower radiator hose.

38. Pull out the lock (B) by hand, then wiggle the quick connector loose, and remove it from the thermostat cover. Do not use any tools to disconnect the quick connector.






39. Remove the purge joint pipe (A), then attach the engine hanger adapter (VSB02C000015) to the threaded hole in the cylinder head.






40. Install the front leg assembly (A), the hook (B), and the wing nut (C) onto the engine support hanger (AAR-T1256). Carefully position the engine support hanger on the vehicle, and attach the hook to the slotted hole in the engine hanger adapter. Tighten the wing nut by hand to lift and support the engine/transmission.

41. Raise the vehicle on the lift.






42. Remove the rear mount mounting bolts.






43. Remove the front mount mounting bolt.






44. Make the appropriate reference lines at positions (A) and (B) that line up with the center of each subframe mounting bolt (C).






45. Attach the front subframe adapter (VSB02C000016) to the subframe by hanging the belt (A) over the front of the subframe (B), then secure the belt with its stop (C).

46. Raise the jack and line up the slots in the front subframe adapter arms with the bolt holes on the jack base, then securely attach them with four bolts.






47. Remove the four subframe mounting bolts, then lower the subframe.






48. Remove the A/C compressor without disconnecting the A/C hoses. Do not bend the A/C hoses excessively.

49. Lower the vehicle on the lift.






50. Install the universal lifting eyelet (07AAK-SNAA120) (A) to the side engine mount bracket with 5 mm (0.2 in.) spacer (B).






51. A/T model: Remove the engine wire harness bracket mount bolts (A), then remove the harness clamps (B).






52. Attach a chain hoist (A) to the universal lifting eyelet (B), and the transmission hook (C), then lift the engine/transmission until it is securely supported by the chain hoist.

53. Remove the engine support hanger from the vehicle.






54. M/T model: Remove the transmission mount bracket support bolt and nuts.






55. A/T model: Remove the transmission mount bracket support bolt and nuts.






56. Remove the upper engine mount bracket bolt and nut.

57. Check that the engine/transmission is completely free of vacuum hoses, fuel hoses, coolant hoses, and electrical wiring.

58. Slowly lower the engine/transmission about 150 mm (6 in.). Check once again that all hoses and electrical wiring are disconnected and free from the engine/transmission, then lower it all the way and support it.

59. Disconnect the chain hoist from the engine/transmission.
NOTE: Carefully position the A/C compressor.

60. Raise the vehicle, and remove the engine/transmission from under the vehicle.
