Safety Recall: Power Tailgate May Not Stay Open
BACKGROUND
Over time, the power tailgate support struts can lose internal pressure. If they lose enough pressure, the struts may not keep the tailgate up after you open it. A tailgate that lowers unintentionally could cause an injury.
CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION
Owners of affected vehicles will receive a notification of this campaign in March 2012.
Do an iN VIN status inquiry to make sure the vehicle is shown as eligible.
In addition, check for a punch mark above the ninth character of the engine compartment VIN. A punch mark in that location means this campaign has already been completed.
Some vehicles affected by this campaign may be in your used vehicle inventory. As a matter of federal law, these vehicles must be repaired before they are sold.
Should a dealership sell an unrepaired vehicle that subsequently causes an injury or damage because of the recalled item, the dealership will be solely responsible to the damaged party, and will be required to defend and indemnify American Honda for any resulting claims. To see if a vehicle in inventory is affected by this campaign, do a VIN status inquiry before selling it.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Replace both tailgate support struts.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
NOTE:
^ Wear eye protection when you pry on the tailgate support strut clips.
^ Have an assistant hold up the tailgate during the procedure.
1. Pry up the clip on both ends of the tailgate support strut with a flat-tip screwdriver. Then, pull the strut off the lower pivot bolt, followed by the upper pivot bolt. Remove the other strut the same way.
NOTE:
To prevent a strut from accidentally contacting and breaking the tailgate glass during removal, always pull the strut off its lower pivot bolt first.
2. With the clip on both ends of the new support struts flush with the strut body, install the new struts by pressing the strut ends into the upper and lower pivot bolts. Make sure both support struts are securely attached to the pivot bolts.
3. Center-punch a completion mark above the ninth character of the engine compartment VIN:
