Water in the Inner Taillights in the Tailgate
SYMPTOM
One or both of the taillights in the tailgate have water inside.
PROBABLE CAUSE
Excess body seam sealer allows the taillight gasket to leak.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Remove both taillights, and remove the excess body seam sealer. Replace the taillight(s) that contain water, and reassemble with new taillight base gaskets.

Any repair performed after warranty expiration may be eligible for goodwill consideration by the District Parts and Service Manager or your Zone Office. You must request consideration, and get a decision, before starting work.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Remove the upper tailgate trim.
^ Release the hooks and the tabs from the left tailgate side trim and the right tailgate side trim.
^ Pull back the tailgate upper trim by hand to detach the clips.
2. Remove the left tailgate side trim and the right tailgate side trim.
^ Pull out the top of the side trim to detach the clips.
^ Release the hooks and the tabs from the tailgate lower trim panel.
3. Release the hooks, and remove the tailgate grip cover, then remove the self-tapping screws.
4. With power tailgate: Gently pry on the rear power tailgate close switch to detach the clips, then disconnect the switch connector.
5. Pull out the tailgate lower trim panel by hand to detach the clips, then remove it.
6. Remove the bolt securing the rear license trim.
7. With navigation: Disconnect the rearview camera unit connector, and detach it from the tailgate.
8. From inside the tailgate, detach the clips. Then gently close the tailgate. Release the harness grommet from the body, then pull out the rear camera unit subharness. Then remove the rearview license trim.
9. Disconnect the connectors from the inner taillights.
10. Remove the four nuts and the inner taillight from each side.
11. Measure 250 mm from the edge of the tailgate across the seam sealer as shown on each side, and mark the seam sealer.
12. Using a plastic trim tool, peel off the 250 mm section of seam sealer on each side.
13. Apply touch-up paint to the area where the seam sealer was removed.
NOTE:
Any color touch-up paint will work, as the area will be covered by the taillight.
14. Inspect the taillights for water.
^ If the taillight contains water, replace it with a new one.
^ If the taillight does not contain water, it will be reused.
15. Reconnect the taillight connectors, and install the taillights with new base gaskets.
16. Reconnect the rear license connectors, and reinstall the rearview camera. Then reinstall the rear license molding.
17. Reconnect the rear license light subharness, and reinstall the rear license trim.
18. Reinstall the tailgate lower trim panel.
19. Reconnect the rear power tailgate switch connector, and reinstall the switch.
20. Reinstall the tailgate grip cover, the tailgate lower trim panel, the left and right side trim, and upper trim.
