Paint Chipping Off The Front Bumper

SYMPTOM





Paint is chipping off the front bumper by the headlights.

PROBABLE CAUSE

Inadequate clearance, plus movement between the front fenders and the bumper, causes the paint to chip off.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Trim the tab from the locator posts on the right and lefi upper beams. If needed, refinish the damaged paint areas of the front bumper.

Any repair performed after warranty expiration may be eligible for goodwill consideration by the District Parts and Service Manager or your Zone Office. You must request consideration, and get a decision, before starting work.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

NOTE:

^ Wear gloves to protect your hands.

^ Take care not to scratch the front bumper and the body.

^ Before prying with a flat-tip screwdriver, wrap it with protective tape to prevent damage.

^ Have an assistant help you when removing and installing the front bumper.





1. Remove the clips, then remove the air intake duct.





2. Remove the clips, then remove the front bulkhead cover.





3. Remove the bolts, the screws, and the clips securing the front bumper.





4. Pull on the front bumper at the wheel arch areas to release it from the hooks on the side spacers.





5. With the help of an assistant, while pulling the wheel arch portion away from the side spacer, pull the front bumper to release it from the hooks on the corner upper beams.





6. With the help of an assistant, disconnect the fog light connectors and the front corner parking sensors (if equipped), then remove the front bumper.

7. Unfasten the bolts, then remove the right and left upper beams.





8. Using a utility knife, carefully trim the plastic tabs from the locator posts on the right and left upper beams. This will relax the front fender's mounting position.

9. Refinish any corresponding damage found with paint matched to the front bumper.

10. Reinstall the upper beams into their mounting holes in the front fenders, then secure them with their bolts

11. Install the bumper in the reverse order of removal. Make sure the fog light connectors and the front corner parking sensors are properly connected (if equipped).

^ Push the clips securely into place.

^ If any clips are damaged or stress-whitened, replace them.

12. Install the front bulkhead cover and the air intake duct.

^ Push the clips securely into place.

^ If any clips are damaged or stress-whitened, replace them.
