Engine Removal
Special Tools Required
- Universal lifting eyelet 07AAK-SNAA120
NOTE:
- Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces.
- To avoid damaging the wires and terminals, unplug the wiring connectors carefully while holding the connector portion.
- Mark all wiring and hoses to avoid misconnection.
Also, be sure that they do not contact other wiring or hoses, or interfere with other parts.
1. Remove the hood support rod from the driver's side of the car, then use it as shown to fix the hood in a vertical position.
2. Relieve the fuel pressure:
- '00-05 models
- '06-09 models Service and Repair
3. Do the battery removal procedure Removal and Replacement
4. Raise the vehicle on the lift.
5. Drain the engine oil. Service and Repair
6. Remove the transmission. Manual Transmission Removal
7. Lower the vehicle on the lift.
8. Disconnect the engine control module (ECM) connectors (A) from the ECM.
9. Disconnect the dashboard wire harness A connector(s) (B).
'00-05 models
'06-09 models
10. '00-05 models: Remove the vacuum tank.
11. '00-05 models: Remove the throttle cable (A) by loosening the locknut (B), then slipping the cable end out of the accelerator linkage. Take care not to bend the cable when removing it. Always replace any kinked cable with a new one.
12. Remove the four bolts (A) securing the electrical power steering (EPS) control unit (B).
13. Disconnect the battery cable (A) from the main under-hood fuse/relay box, then remove the harness clamps (B).
14. Disconnect the battery cable (A) from the auxiliary under-hood fuse box, and remove the ground cable (B) and the harness clamps (C).
15. Remove the grommet (D) from the bulkhead, then pull out the ECM connectors.
16. Wait until the engine is cool, then carefully remove the radiator cap.
17. Raise the vehicle on the lift.
18. Loose the drain plug in the radiator, and drain the engine coolant. Service and Repair
'00-05 models
'06-09 models
19. Remove the engine stop bracket cushion (A), then remove the engine stop bracket (B).
20. Lower the vehicle on the lift.
21. Disconnect the heater hoses (A) and the lower radiator hose (B).
22. Disconnect the upper radiator hose.
23. '00-05 models: Disconnect the fuel feed hose (A), the fuel return hose (B) and the brake booster vacuum hose (C).
'00-03 models
'04-05 models
24. '06-09 models: Remove the intake manifold cover.
25. '06-09 models: Remove the quick-connect fitting cover (A), then disconnect the fuel feed hose (B) and the brake booster vacuum hose (C).
26. Disconnect the evaporative emission (EVAP) canister hose.
'00-05 models
'06-09 models
27. Attach the chain hoist to the engine as shown.
Take care not to damage the rocker arm oil control valve (VTEC solenoid valve) and the wire harness.
28. Disconnect the A/C compressor clutch connector, then remove the A/C compressor without disconnecting the A/C hoses. Do not bend the A/C hoses excessively. Service and Repair
29. Remove the support nut from the left side engine mount bracket.
30. Remove the support nut (A) and the four mounting bolts (B), then remove the right side engine mount bracket (C).
31. Check that the engine is completely free of vacuum hoses, fuel hoses, coolant hoses, and electrical wiring.
32. Slowly raise the engine about 150 mm (6 in.). Check once again that all the hoses and the wires are disconnected from the engine.
33. Raise the engine all the way, and remove it from the vehicle.
