Dashboard/Steering Hanger Beam Removal and Installation
Removal
SRS components are located in this area. Review the SRS component locations Locations and the precautions and procedures Service and Repair before doing repairs or service.
1. Battery Terminal (SRS) - Disconnection
1. Make sure the ignition switch is in LOCK (0).
2. Disconnect and isolate the negative cable (A) from the battery.
NOTE: Always disconnect the negative side first.
3. Disconnect the positive cable (B) from the battery.
4. Wait at least 3 minutes before starting work.
2. Front Door Opening Seal As Needed - Both Sides
1. Pull out the front door opening seal (A) from the trim hooks (B) around the front door opening flange, then detach the seal as needed.
2. Repeat this step on the opposite side.
3. A-Pillar Trim - Both Sides
NOTE: Repeat on the opposite side.
1. Pull out the A-pillar trim (A) by hand to release the clips (B, C).
2. Put a shop towel (A) in the opening between the A-pillar trim (B) and the dashboard to prevent dropping the A-pillar clips.
3. Pull out and up on the A-pillar trim (A) to release it from the dashboard.
NOTE: The upper clip will stay in the body.
4. Remove the upper clip (A) from the body.
4. Driver's Dashboard Undercover
1. Turn the lock knob (A) 90 °, then gently pull down the front edge of the driver's dashboard undercover (B) to detach the clip (C).
2. Pull away the undercover to release the pin (D) from the holder (E), then remove the driver's dashboard undercover.
5. Passenger's Dashboard Undercover
1. Gently pull down the passenger's dashboard undercover (A) to detach the clips (B), then pull away the undercover to release the pins (C) from the holder (D).
6. Driver's Dashboard Panel Assembly
1. Carefully pry out the driver's dashboard panel assembly (A) with the appropriate trim tool to detach the clips (B).
2. Disconnect the connector (C), then remove the driver's dashboard panel assembly.
7. Driver's Dashboard Lower Cover
1. Carefully pry out the driver's dashboard lower cover (A) with the appropriate trim tool to detach the clips (B).
2. Disconnect the connector (C), then remove the driver's dashboard lower cover.
8. Kick Panel - Both Sides
Driver's side
Passenger's side
1. Pull out the front door opening seal (A) as needed from the kick panel hooks and the door opening flange.
2. Pull back the kick panel by hand to detach the clips (B), then remove the driver's side kick panel (C) and the passenger's side kick panel (D).
9. Glove Box - Move
1. Detach the glove box damper hook (A), and release both glove box stops (B) by pushing them in, then let glove box (C) hang down.
10. Front Console Cover - Both Sides
Left side
Right side
1. Remove the clips (A).
2. Detach the clips (B), then remove the front console covers (C).
11. Center Console Rear Trim
1. Carefully pry out the center console rear trim (A) with the appropriate trim tool to detach the clips (B) and the hooks (C), then remove the center console rear trim.
12. Center Console
1. Carefully pry out the center lower cover (A) with the appropriate trim tool to detach the clips (B), then remove the center lower cover.
2. Remove the bolt (C).
3. Remove the bolts (A).
4. Remove the console box mat (A), then remove the bolts (B).
5. Disconnect the connectors (A), and remove the clips (B).
6. Slide both front seats fully rearward, and recline the seat-backs around two thirds to the rear.
7. Remove the center console (A).
13. Driver's Airbag
1. Remove the access panel (A).
2. Disconnect the driver's airbag inflator connector (B) on the cable reel harness.
3. Disconnect the horn switch connector (C).
4. Remove the TORX bolts using a TORX T30 bit.
5. Remove the driver's airbag (A).
14. Steering Wheel Assembly
1. Set the front wheels in the straight ahead position.
2. Disconnect the connector (A).
3. Loosen the steering wheel bolt (B) three turns.
4. Install a commercially available steering wheel puller (A) on the steering wheel (B).
5. Free the steering wheel from the steering column shaft by turning the pressure bolt (C) of the puller.
Note these items when removing the steering wheel:
* Do not tap on the steering wheel or the steering column shaft when removing the steering wheel.
* If you thread the puller bolts (D) into the wheel hub more than five threads, the bolts will hit the cable reel and damage it. To prevent this, install a pair of jam nuts five threads up on each puller bolt.
6. Remove the steering wheel puller.
7. Remove the steering wheel (A) from the steering column.
15. Upper Column Cover
1. Carefully pry out the dashboard meter visor blind cover (A) with the appropriate trim tool to detach the clips (B) and the hook (C), then tuck up the dashboard meter visor blind cover.
2. Remove the upper column cover (A).
16. Lower Column Cover
1. Turn the steering wheel to the left. Remove the screw (A) securing the lower column cover (B) from the front side.
2. Turn the steering wheel to the right. Remove the screw securing the lower column cover from the front side.
3. Remove the screw (A), then remove the lower column cover (B).
17. Combination Switch Body Assembly
1. Disconnect the connectors (A).
2. Remove the clip (B).
3. Disconnect the connectors (A).
4. Remove the combination switch body assembly (A) from the steering column shaft.
18. Steering Joint Cover
1. Remove the steering joint cover (A).
19. Steering Column Lower Slide Shaft - Hold
1. Set the steering column to the center tilt position, and to the center telescopic position.
2. Hold the lower slide shaft (A) on the column with a piece of wire (B) between the joint yoke (C) of the lower slide shaft and the joint yoke (D) of the upper shaft to prevent the lower slider shaft from pulling out.
20. Steering Joint - Disconnection
1. Remove the steering joint bolt (A).
2. Disconnect the steering joint (B) from the pinion shaft.
NOTE:
* If the center guide (C) is in place and has not moved, leave it in place.
* If the center guide has come off, discard it.
21. Steering Column
1. Disconnect the connectors (A) from the ignition switch (B).
2. Detach the wire harness clips (C) from the steering column.
3. Remove the steering column (D).
NOTE: Do not release the lock lever until the steering column is installed. If the lock lever is released before installation, adjust the steering column after installation.
22. Center Maintenance Cover
1. Remove the maintenance cover (A).
23. Shift Lever Panel (AT)
1. Carefully pry out the shift lever panel (A) with the appropriate trim tool to detach the clips (B, C) and the hooks (D), then remove the shift lever panel.
24. Shift Cable - Disconnection Lever Side
1. Shift the shift lever to R.
2. Insert a 6.0 mm (0.236 in) pin (A) into the positioning holes (B).
NOTE: Use only a 6.0 mm (0.236 in) pin with no burrs.
3. Remove the nut (C) securing the shift cable end (D).
4. Unlock the retainer lock (A).
5. Rotate the socket holder retainer (A) counterclockwise (B) until it stops, and push the retainer lock (C) into the socket holder retainer to lock the retainer.
6. Slide the socket holder (A) away from the bracket as shown to remove the shift cable (B) from the shift cable bracket (C).
NOTE: Do not remove the shift cable by pulling the shift cable guide (D).
25. Dashboard/Steering Hanger Beam
Driver's side
Passenger's side
1. At the A-pillar, disconnect the connector(s) (A).
2. From under the dash, disconnect the connectors (A).
3. From under the dash, remove the nut (A) and the bolt (B).
4. With climate control: Disconnect the aspirator hose (A).
5. Disconnect the connector (B).
6. From under the dash, disconnect the connectors (A).
7. Remove the bolts (B, C), and remove the ground bolt (D) with a TORX T30 bit.
8. From under the dash, disconnect the connectors (A), and detach the harness clips (B).
9. Loosen the special bolts (A) until they disengage from the threads on the hanger beam side bracket (B), and engage the inside threads of the collar bolts (C). The thread lock on the special bolts makes the special bolts and the collar bolts turn together.
10. Continue loosening the special bolts to turn the collar bolts into the fixed space adjusters (D) until the collar bolts engage the stops (E). This creates a gap (F) between the collar bolts and the body.
11. Loosen the special bolts to disengage them from the collar bolts, then remove them.
12. Check that the collar bolts (A) are seated in the fixed space adjusters (B).
NOTE: If either collar bolt was not seated, replace the special bolts.
13. Remove the bolts (A, B).
14. Remove the dashboard/steering hanger beam (A).
15. If necessary, detach the hooks (A), then remove the dashboard upper side cover (B).
26. Upper Dashboard Support Gusset
1. If necessary, remove the upper dashboard support gusset (A).
