Parking Brake System: Adjustments






Parking Brake Inspection and Adjustment

Inspection

1. Parking Brake Pedal - Inspection





1. Press the parking brake pedal (A) with 294 N (30.0 kgf, 66.1 lbf) of force to fully apply the parking brake.

2. The parking brake pedal should be locked within the specified number of clicks.

Pedal locked clicks: 5 to 6 clicks

3. Adjust the parking brake if the pedal clicks are not within the specification.

NOTE: Minor parking brake pedal adjustments (1 to 2 clicks) can be made with the adjusting nut (see parking brake minor adjustment). If a larger adjustment is required, follow the major adjustment procedure using the adjuster nut at the parking brake drum (see parking brake major adjustment). After installing new parking brake shoes and/or new brake disc/drum, make sure you drive the vehicle for "break-in"

Removal

NOTE:
* For the parking brake minor adjustment, go to steps 1-2.
* For the parking brake major adjustment, go to step 3-6.

1. Equalizer Cover





1. Pull back the left rear carpet/cutout/insulation, under the driver's seat.

2. Remove the equalizer cover (A).

2. Parking Brake Return Spring





1. Disconnect and remove the return spring (A).

3. Vehicle Lift

1. Raise the vehicle on a lift, and make sure it is securely supported.

4. Rear Wheel - Both Side





1. Remove both rear wheels.

5. Equalizer Cover





1. Pull back the left rear carpet/cutout/insulation, under the driver's seat.

2. Remove the equalizer cover (A).

6. Parking Brake Adjusting Bolt - Loosen





1. Release the parking brake pedal fully.

2. Disconnect and remove the return spring (A).

3. Loosen the adjusting nut (B).

Adjustment

NOTE:
* For the parking brake minor adjustment, go to step 1.
* For the parking brake major adjustment, go to step 2.

1. Minor Parking Brake - Adjustment





1. Release the parking brake pedal fully.

2. Press the parking brake pedal 1 click.

3. Tighten the adjusting nut (A) until the parking brakes drag slightly when the rear wheels are turned.

4. Release the parking brake pedal fully.

5. Check that the parking brakes do not drag when the rear wheels are turned. Readjust if necessary.





6. Press the parking brake pedal (A) with 294 N (30.0 kgf, 66.1 lbf) of force to fully apply the parking brake.

7. Make sure the parking brake pedal is within the specified number of clicks.

Pedal locked clicks: 5 to 6 clicks

2. Major Parking Brake - Adjustment





1. Remove the access plug (A).

2. Turn the ratchet teeth on the adjuster nut (B) with a brake adjuster tool or a flat-tip screwdriver (C) until the shoes lock against the parking brake drum. Then back off the adjuster 7 clicks, and install the access plug.





3. Install the rear wheel on both sides.

NOTE: Before installing the wheel, clean the mating surfaces between the brake disc or the brake drum and the inside of the wheel.

4. Release the parking brake pedal fully.

5. Press the parking brake pedal 1 click.





6. Tighten the adjusting nut (A) until the parking brakes drag slightly when the rear wheels are turned.

7. Release the parking brake pedal fully.

8. Check that the parking brakes do not drag when the rear wheels are turned. Readjust if necessary.





9. Press the parking brake pedal (A) with 294 N (30.0 kgf, 66.1 lbf) of force to fully apply the parking brake.

10. Make sure the parking brake pedal is within the specified number of clicks.

Pedal locked clicks: 5 to 6 clicks

Installation

1. Parking Brake Return Spring





1. Install the return spring (A).

2. Equalizer Cover





1. Install the equalizer cover (A).

2. Fold back into place the left rear carpet/cutout/insulation.
