Parking Brake System: Testing and Inspection






Parking Brake Inspection

Removal

1. Vehicle Lift

1. Raise the vehicle on a lift, and make sure it is securely supported.

2. Rear Wheel - Both Side





1. Remove both rear wheels.

3. Equalizer Cover





1. Pull back the left rear carpet/cutout/insulation, under the driver's seat.

2. Remove the equalizer cover (A).

4. Parking Brake Adjusting Bolt - Loosen





1. Release the parking brake pedal fully.

2. Disconnect and remove the return spring (A).

3. Loosen the adjusting nut (B).

5. Rear Brake Caliper - Detach





1. Remove the brake hose mounting bolt (A).

2. Remove the caliper assembly (B).

NOTE:
* To prevent damage to the caliper assembly or brake hose, use a short piece of wire to hang the caliper assembly from the undercarriage.
* Do not twist the brake hose and the parking brake cable excessively.

6. Rear Brake Disc





1. Remove the brake disc/drum flathead screws (A).

2. Remove the brake disc/drum (B).

NOTE:
* Remove the adjuster plug (C), then if necessary, turn the adjuster bolt (D) with a flat-tip screwdriver until the shoes become loose.
* If the brake disc/drum is stuck to the hub bearing unit, thread two 8 x 1.25 mm bolts (E) into the brake disc/drum to push it away from the hub bearing unit. Turn each bolt 90 degrees at a time to prevent the brake disc/drum from binding.

Inspection

1. Parking Brake Inspection





1. Check the parking brake linings (A) for cracking, glazing, wear, and contamination.

2. Measure the parking brake lining thickness (B). Measurement does not include brake shoe thickness.







3. If any part of the parking brake lining thickness is less than the service limit, replace all of the parking brake shoes as a set.

4. Check the hub (C) for smooth operation. If it requires servicing, replace the hub bearing unit.





5. Measure the inside diameter of the parking brake drum with an inside vernier caliper.







6. If the inside diameter of the parking brake drum is more than the service limit, replace the brake disc/drum.

7. Check the parking brake disc/drum for scoring, grooves, and cracks.

Installation

1. Rear Brake Disc





1. Install the brake disc (A).

NOTE: Before installing the brake disc, clean the mating surfaces between the hub bearing unit and the inside of the brake disc.

2. Rear Brake Caliper - Reattach





1. Install the caliper assembly (A).

2. Install the brake hose mounting bolt (B).

3. Major Parking Brake - Adjustment





1. Remove the access plug (A).

2. Turn the ratchet teeth on the adjuster nut (B) with a brake adjuster tool or a flat-tip screwdriver (C) until the shoes lock against the parking brake drum. Then back off the adjuster 7 clicks, and install the access plug.

4. Rear Wheel - Both Side





1. Install both rear wheels.

NOTE: Before installing the wheel, clean the mating surfaces between the brake disc/drum and the inside of the wheel.

5. Minor Parking Brake - Adjustment





1. Release the parking brake pedal fully.

2. Press the parking brake pedal 1 click.

3. Tighten the adjusting nut (A) until the parking brakes drag slightly when the rear wheels are turned.

4. Release the parking brake pedal fully.

5. Check that the parking brakes do not drag when the rear wheels are turned. Readjust if necessary.





6. Press the parking brake pedal (A) with 294 N (30.0 kgf, 66.1 lbf) of force to fully apply the parking brake.

7. Make sure the parking brake pedal is within the specified number of clicks.

Pedal locked clicks: 5 to 6 clicks

6. Parking Brake Return Spring





1. Install the return spring (A).

7. Equalizer Cover





1. Install the equalizer cover (A).

2. Fold back into place the left rear carpet/cutout/insulation.
