Compression Check: Testing and Inspection

Engine Compression Inspection

Removal

1. Warm Up The Engine

1. Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 3,000 rpm without load in P or N until the radiator fan comes on, then let it idle.

2. HDS DLC - Connection

1. Connect the HDS to the data link connector (DLC) (A) located under the driver's side of the dashboard.

2. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).

3. Make sure the HDS communicates with the vehicle. If it does not communicate, go to the DLC circuit troubleshooting.

3. All Injectors Stop

1. Select ALL INJECTORS STOP in the PGM-FI INSPECTION menu with the HDS.

4. Ignition Coil Cover

1. Remove the ignition coil cover.

5. Ignition Coil

1. Remove the ignition coils.

6. Spark Plug

1. Remove the spark plugs.

Inspection

NOTE: After this inspection, you must reset the ECM. Otherwise, the ECM will continue to stop the injectors from operating.

1. Engine Compression - Inspection

1. Attach a compression gauge to the spark plug hole.

2. Step on the accelerator pedal to open the throttle fully, then crank the engine with the starter motor, and measure the compression.

3. Measure the compression on the remaining cylinders.

4. If the compression is not within specifications, perform a cylinder leak down test to determine the problem area. Then check the following items, and remeasure the compression:

* Incorrect valve clearance
* Confirmation of cam timing
* Damaged or worn valves and seats
* Damaged cylinder head gasket
* Damaged or worn piston rings
* Damaged or worn piston and cylinder bore

5. Remove the compression gauge from the spark plug hole.

Installation

1. Spark Plug

1. Apply a small amount of anti-seize compound to the plug threads, and screw the plugs into the cylinder head, finger tight, then tighten the plugs to the specified torque.

2. Ignition Coil

1. Install the ignition coils.

3. Ignition Coil Cover

1. Install the ignition coil cover.

5. All Injectors Stop

1. Select PCM reset in the PGM-FI INSPECTION menu to cancel ALL INJECTORS STOP with the HDS.
