Automatic Transmission Removal and Installation

Installation
1. Torque Converter
1. Install the torque converter (A) using a new O-ring (B).
NOTE: Make sure the torque converter is fully engaged on the mainshaft, the stator shaft, and the ATF pump drive gear. Failure to do so will result in severe transmission or engine damage.
2. Install the dowel pins (C).
2. A/T Assembly
1. Install new stud bolts.
2. Place the transmission on a jack, and raise the transmission to the engine level.
3. Attach the transmission to the engine.
4. Install the front transmission assembly mounting bolts.
5. Install the rear transmission assembly mounting bolts.
6. Install the lower transmission assembly mounting bolts.
3. CKP Sensor Cover
1. Install the CKP sensor cover (A).
4. A/T Intermediate Shaft Assembly
1. Clean the areas where the intermediate shaft contacts the differential thoroughly with solvent, and dry them with compressed air.
NOTE: Do not wash the rubber parts with solvent.
2. Insert the intermediate shaft (A) into the differential correctly.
NOTE: Insert the intermediate shaft carefully to prevent damaging the oil seal (B).
3. Install the two dowel bolts (A) and the flange bolt (B).
5. Driveshaft Front Both, Inboard Side - Reconnection
Left Driveshaft
1. Left driveshaft: Install a new set ring (A) into the set ring groove (B) of the driveshaft.

2. Left driveshaft: Clean the areas where the driveshaft contacts the differential thoroughly with solvent, then dry them with compressed air.
NOTE: Do not wash the rubber parts with solvent.
3. Left driveshaft: Insert the inboard end (A) of the driveshaft into the differential (B) until the set ring (C) locks in the groove (D).
NOTE: Insert the driveshaft horizontally to prevent damaging the oil seal.
4. Right driveshaft: Install a new set ring (A) into the set ring groove (B) of the intermediate shaft.
Right Driveshaft
5. Right driveshaft: Apply 0.5-1.0 g (0.018-0.035 oz) of molybdenum grease to the whole splined surface (A) of the right driveshaft.
6. Right driveshaft: After applying grease, remove the grease from the splined grooves at intervals of 2-3 splines and from the set ring groove (B) so that air can bleed from the intermediate shaft.

7. Right driveshaft: Clean the areas where the driveshaft contacts the intermediate shaft thoroughly with solvent, then dry them with compressed air.
NOTE: Do not wash the rubber parts with solvent.
8. Right driveshaft: Insert the inboard end (A) of the driveshaft into the intermediate shaft (B) until the set ring (C) locks in the groove (D).
6. Torque Converter - Reconnection
1. Attach the torque converter to the drive plate (A) with eight drive plate bolts (B). Rotate the crankshaft pulley as necessary to tighten the bolt to half of the specified torque, then to the final torque, in a crisscross pattern. After tightening the last bolt, check that the crankshaft rotates freely.
2. Install the torque converter cover (C).
7. A/T Peripheral Assembly, Lower Side
1. Connect the connectors (A).
2. Connect the ATF warmer hose (A) until the hose end contacts the bracket.
3. Secure the hose with the clip (B) at 6-8 mm (0.24-0.31 in) (C) from the hose end. Keep the tabs of the clip clear of other parts.
4. Install the harness clamps (A).
5. Connect the connectors (B).
8. Subframe Support
1. Attach the subframe adapter to the front subframe by looping the belt (A) over the front of the front subframe (B), then secure the belt with its stop (C).
9. Front Subframe - Alignment
NOTE:
* Align the front subframe in the following sequence.
* When Installing, align both installation reference holes in the subframe with both reference holes in the body using the subframe alignment pin as a guide.
1. Lift the front subframe (A) up to the body, and loosely install new subframe mounting bolts (B, C).
2. Loosely install new mid mounting bolts (D).
3. Insert the subframe alignment pin (E) through the positioning hole (F) on the right rear subframe, and into the positioning hole (G) on the body, then loosely tighten the subframe right rear mounting bolt.
4. Insert the subframe alignment pin through the positioning hole on the left rear subframe, and into the positioning hole on the body, then loosely tighten the subframe left rear mounting bolt.
5. Tighten the subframe mounting bolts to the specified torque values starting with the right rear subframe mounting bolt. Use the subframe alignment pin when tightening the rear side subframe mounting bolts.
6. Check all of the subframe mounting bolts, and retighten if necessary.
NOTE: Tighten the bolts in the sequence shown.
7. Tighten the mid mounting bolts to the specified torque.
8. After reinstalling all remaining parts, check and adjust the front wheel alignment.
10. EPS Motor Connector - Disconnection/Reconnection
1. Install the harness clip (A).
2. Pull down the lever (B) of the EPS motor 3P connector (C), then confirm the connector is fully seated.
3. Connect the Connectors (D).
11. Front Engine Mount - Disconnection/Reconnection
1. Loosely install the front engine mount mounting bolt.
12. Lower Torque Rod - Reconnection
1. Loosely install the new lower torque rod mounting bolts.
13. Front Stabilizer Link Stabilizer Bar Side - Reconnection, Both Side
1. Connect both sides of the stabilizer link (A) to the front stabilizer bar (B).
2. Install the flange nuts (C), and tighten them to the specified torque while holding the respective joint pin (D) with a hex wrench (E).
14. Tie-Rod End Ball Joint - Connection, Both Side
1. Wipe off any grease contamination from the ball joint tapered section and threads.
2. Connect the tie-rod ball joint (A) to the knuckle.
3. Install the nut (B) and tighten to the specified torque.
4. Install a new cotter pin (C).
NOTE: Bend the cotter pin as shown.
15. Lower Arm Joint - Reconnection, Both Knuckle Side
1. Connect the lower arm to the knuckle on both sides using new flange bolt and new self-locking nuts.
2. After lightly tightening all three fasteners, tighten them to the specified torque in the following order; the nut on the front (B), the nut on the rear (C), then the bolt (D).
16. Transfer Assembly (AWD/4WD)
1. Install a new O-ring (A) on the transfer assembly (B).
2. Install the transfer assembly and the dowel pin (C).
17. Under Floor TWC Assembly
1. Install the under-floor TWC.
18. Propeller Shaft Assembly (AWD/4WD)
1. Install the propeller shaft assembly (A), then Install new center support bearing mounting bolts (B).
19. Propeller Shaft Differential Side - Reconnection (AWD/4WD)
1. Set the No. 2 propeller shaft (A) to the rear differential companion flange (B) by aligning the reference mark (C) you made during the removal procedure.
2. Install new No. 2 propeller shaft flange bolts (D) to the specified torque.
20. Propeller Shaft Transmission Side - Reconnection (AWD/4WD)
1. Set the No. 1 propeller shaft (A) to the transfer companion flange (B) by aligning the reference mark (C) you made during the removal procedure.
2. Install new No. 1 propeller shaft flange bolts (D) to the specified torque.
21. Propeller Shaft Protector No.2 (AWD/4WD)
1. Install the No. 2 propeller shaft protector (A).
22. Propeller Shaft Protector No.1 (AWD/4WD)
1. Install the No. 1 propeller shaft protector (A).
23. Left Middle Floor Undercover (AWD/4WD)
1. Install the left middle floor undercover (A), then install the bolts (B) and the clips (C, D). The clips snap into place securely.
24. Front Floor Undercover
1. Install the front floor undercover (A), then install the bolts (B) and the clips (C, D). Make sure the clips snap into place securely.
25. A/T Shift Cable Cover Bracket
2WD
AWD/4WD
1. Install the shift cable cover bracket (A).
26. Shift Cable - Reconnection A/T Side (2WD of USA Produced Models)
2WD of USA Produced Models
1. Install the shift cable bracket (A).
2. Install the control lever (B) over the selector control shaft (C).
NOTE: Do not bend the shift cable excessively.
3. Install the lock bolt (D) using a new lock washer (E).
4. Pry up the lock tab (F) of the lock washer against the bolt head.
27. Shift Cable - Reconnection A/T Side (Except 2WD of USA Produced Models)
Except 2WD of USA Produced Models
AWD/4WD
1. Apply molybdenum grease to the hole in the bushing (A) in the shift cable end (B).
2. Install the shift cable bracket(s) (C).
3. Attach the shift cable end to the selector control lever (D), then insert the control pin (E) into the control lever hole through the shift cable end.
NOTE: Do not bend the shift cable excessively.
4. Secure the control pin with the spring clip (F).
28. Shift Cable Cover
2WD
AWD/4WD
1. Install the shift cable cover (A).
29. Lower The Vehicle On The Lift
1. Lower the vehicle on the lift.
30. Upper Torque Rod Mounting Bolt - Loosen
1. Loosen the upper torque rod mounting bolt (A).
