Automatic Transmission Removal and Installation

Removal
NOTE:
* Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces.
* Special tool Reds engine support hanger AAR-T1256 must be used with the side engine mount installed.
26. Shift Cable - Disconnection A/T Side (Except 2WD of USA Produced Models)
Except 2WD of USA Produced Models
AWD/4WD
1. Remove the spring clip (A) and the control pin (B).
2. Separate the shift cable (C) from the selector control lever (D).
NOTE: Do not bend the shift cable excessively.
3. Remove the shift cable bracket(s) (E).
4. Check the bushing (F) in the shift cable end for proper fit and wear. If the bushing is loose or worn, replace the shift cable.
27. Shift Cable - Disconnection A/T Side (2WD of USA Produced Models)
2WD of USA Produced Models
1. Pry down the lock tab (A) of the lock washer (B).
2. Remove the lock bolt (C) and the lock washer.
3. Separate the shift cable (D) from the selector control shaft (E).
NOTE: Do not bend the shift cable excessively.
4. Remove the shift cable bracket (F).
28. A/T Shift Cable Cover Bracket
2WD
AWD/4WD
1. Remove the shift cable cover bracket (A).
29. Front Floor Undercover
1. Remove the bolts (A) and the clips (B, C) securing the front floor undercover (D), then remove the front floor undercover.
30. Left Middle Floor Undercover (AWD/4WD)
1. Remove the bolts (A) and clips (B, C), then remove the left middle floor undercover (D).
31. Propeller Shaft Protector No.1 (AWD/4WD)
1. Remove the No. 1 propeller shaft protector (A).
32. Propeller Shaft Protector No.2 (AWD/4WD)
1. Remove the No. 2 propeller shaft protector (A).
33. Propeller Shaft Transmission Side - Disconnection (AWD/4WD)
1. Make reference mark (A) across the No. 1 propeller shaft (B) and the transfer companion flange (C).
2. Remove the No. 1 propeller shaft flange bolts (D).
34. Propeller Shaft Differential Side - Disconnection (AWD/4WD)
1. Make reference mark (A) across the No. 2 propeller shaft (B) and the rear differential companion flange (C).
2. Remove the No. 2 propeller shaft flange bolts (D).
35. Propeller Shaft Assembly (AWD/4WD)
1. Remove the center support bearing mounting bolts (A), then remove the propeller shaft assembly (B).
36. Under-Floor TWC Assembly
1. Remove the under-floor TWC.
37. Transfer Assembly (AWD/4WD)
1. Remove the transfer assembly (A) and the dowel pin (B).
2. Remove the O-ring (C) from the transfer assembly.
38. Lower Torque Rod - Disconnection
1. Remove the lower torque rod mounting bolts.
39. Front Engine Mount - Disconnection/Reconnection
1. Remove the front engine mount mounting bolt.
40. EPS Motor Connector - Disconnection/Reconnection
NOTE: Wrap the connectors with vinyl tape to avoid contamination from grease or water.
1. Disconnect the EPS motor 3P connector (A) by pushing the lock (B) and pulling up the lever (C).
2. Disconnect the connectors (D).
3. Remove the harness clip (E).
41. Subframe Support
1. Attach the subframe adapter (A) to the front subframe by looping the belt (B) over the front of the front subframe (C), then secure the belt with its stop (D).
2. Raise the jack and line up the slots in the subframe adapter arms with the bolt holes on the jack base, then securely attach them with four bolts.
42. Front Subframe Assembly
1. Remove the front subframe mid bolts.
2. Remove the front subframe mounting bolts.
3. Lower the front subframe.
43. Transmission Jack Support
1. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
44. A/T Peripheral Assembly, Lower Side
1. Disconnect the connectors (A).
2. Remove the harness clamps (B).
3. Disconnect the ATF warmer hose (A).
4. Turn the end of the ATF hose up to prevent ATF from flowing out, then plug the hose and line.
5. Disconnect the connectors (A).
45. Torque Converter - Disconnection
1. Remove the torque converter cover (A).
2. Remove eight drive plate bolts (B) while rotating the crankshaft pulley.
46. Driveshaft Front Both, Inboard Side - Disconnection
Left Driveshaft
1. Left driveshaft: Pry the inboard joint (A) from the differential using a pry bar (B).
NOTE:
* Do not pull on the driveshaft (C), or the inboard joint may come apart. Pull the inboard joint straight out to avoid damaging the oil seal.
* Be careful not to damage the oil seal or the end of the inboard joint using the pry bar.
Left Driveshaft
2. Left driveshaft: Remove the set ring (A) from the inboard joint.
Right Driveshaft
3. Right driveshaft: Drive the inboard joint (A) off of the intermediate shaft using a drift punch and a hammer.
NOTE: Do not pull on the driveshaft (B), or the inboard joint may come apart.
4. Right driveshaft: Remove the set ring (A) from the intermediate shaft.
47. A/T Intermediate Shaft Assembly
1. Remove the flange bolt (A) and the two dowel bolts (B).
2. Remove the intermediate shaft (A) from the differential. Hold the intermediate shaft horizontal until it is clear of the differential to prevent damaging the oil seal (B).
48. CKP Sensor Cover
1. Remove the CKP sensor cover (A).
49. A/T Assembly
1. Lower the transmission by loosening the wing nut of the engine support hanger, and tilt the engine just enough for the transmission to clear its end from the side frame.
2. Remove the lower transmission assembly mounting bolts.
3. Remove the front transmission assembly mounting bolts.
4. Remove the rear transmission assembly mounting bolts.
5. Check once again that the transmission is free of hoses and electrical wiring.
6. Slide the transmission away from the engine by holding the torque converter in the transmission, then remove it from the vehicle.
NOTE: Be careful not to drop the torque converter.
7. Remove the stud bolts.
50. Torque Converter
1. Remove the torque converter (A), the O-ring (B), and the dowel pins (C).
2. Inspect the drive plate, and replace it if it is damaged.
