SRS DTC Troubleshooting: 81-61, 81-62

DTC 81-61 : No Signal From the ODS Unit
DTC 81-62 : Incorrect Data From the ODS Unit

NOTE:
* Before doing this troubleshooting procedure, find out if the vehicle was in a collision. If so, verify that all the required components were replaced with new components, of the correct part number, and that they were properly installed Service and Repair.
* Before doing this troubleshooting procedure, review SRS Precautions and Procedures Service and Repair, General Troubleshooting Information Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes, and Battery Terminal Disconnection and Reconnection Procedures.
* Before replacing the SRS unit, check the SRS unit software version with the HDS. If the software version is not the latest, update the SRS unit software Programming and Relearning, and retest.
* These DTCs are codes that relate to the front passenger's weight sensor operation.

1. Problem verification:

-1. Make sure nothing is on the front passenger's seat.

-2. Clear the DTCs with the HDS Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes.

-3. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II), then wait for 10 seconds.

-4. Check for DTCs with the HDS Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes.

Is DTC 81-61 or 81-62 indicated?
-YES- The failure is duplicated. Go to step 2.
-NO- Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Go to Troubleshooting Intermittent Failures Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes. If another DTC is indicated, troubleshoot the DTC.

2. Fuse check:

-1. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

-2. Check the following fuse.

Is the fuse OK?
-YES- Go to step 3.
-NO- Replace the fuse, then turn the ignition switch to ON (II). If the fuse blows again, check for a short to ground in the under-dash fuse/relay box No. B29 (7.5 A) fuse circuit (dashboard wire harness, floor wire harness, or ODS unit harness); replace the faulty harness, then clear the DTC, and retest. If the DTC is still present, replace the under-dash fuse/relay box Under-Dash Fuse/Relay Box Removal and Installation, then clear the DTC.

3. Connector connection check:

-1. Turn over the seat-back cover/pad to gain access to the ODS unit Front Seat-Back Cover Removal And Installation.

-2. Remove the cover (A), then check the connection between the ODS unit 18P connector (B) and the ODS unit.

Is the connector OK?
-YES- Go to step 5.
-NO- Go to step 4.

4. System check:

-1. Repair the poor connector connection which was the cause of the problem in step 3.

-YES- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0), then go to step 5.
-NO- The system is OK at this time.

5. Open wire check (VA line):

-1. Detach the clip (A), then disconnect the ODS unit 18P connector (B) from the ODS unit.

-2. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).

-3. Measure the voltage between test points 1 and 2.

Is there battery voltage?
-YES- The VA wire is OK. Go to step 6.
-NO- Open in the floor wire harness or the ODS unit harness; replace the faulty harness, then clear the DTC.

6. Open wire check (GND ODS line):

-1. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

-2. Measure the resistance between test points 1 and 2.

Is there less than 1.0 Ohms?
-YES- The GND ODS wire is OK. Go to step 7.
-NO- Open in the floor wire harness or the ODS unit harness; check for a poor ground connection at G602. If the ground is OK, replace the faulty harness, then clear the DTC.

7. Shorted wire check (ODS line):

-1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery, then wait at least 3 minutes.

-2. Disconnect the following connector.

-3. Measure the resistance between test points 1 and 2.

Is there an open circuit, or at least 1 MOhms?
-YES- The ODS wire is not shorted. Go to step 8.
-NO- Short to ground in the floor wire harness or the ODS unit harness; replace the faulty harness, then clear the DTC.

8. Shorted wire check (ODS line to power):

-1. Reconnect the negative cable to the battery.

-2. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).

-3. Measure the voltage between test points 1 and 2.

Is there less than 0.2 V?
-YES- The ODS wire is not shorted to power. Go to step 9.
-NO- Short to power in the floor wire harness or the ODS unit harness; replace the faulty harness, then clear the DTC.

9. Open wire check (ODS line):

-1. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

-2. Measure the resistance between test points 1 and 2.

Is there less than 1.0 Ohms?
-YES- The ODS wire is OK. Replace the ODS unit ODS Unit Removal and Installation, then clear the DTC, and retest. If the DTC is still present, replace the SRS unit Service and Repair.
-NO- Open in the harness between SRS unit connector B (39P) terminal No. 21 and ODS unit 18P connector terminal No. 1 (floor wire harness or ODS unit harness); replace the faulty harness, then clear the DTC.
