Removal






Steering Rack End Removal and Installation









*Available through the Honda Tool and Equipment Program 888-424-6857

Removal

NOTE: Do not allow dust, dirt, or other foreign materials to enter the steering gearbox.

1. Battery Terminal (SRS) - Disconnection





1. Make sure the ignition switch is in LOCK (0).

2. Disconnect and isolate the negative cable (A) from the battery.

NOTE: Always disconnect the negative side first.

3. Disconnect the positive cable (B) from the battery.

4. Wait at least 3 minutes before starting work.

2. Vehicle Lift

1. Raise the vehicle on a lift, and make sure it is securely supported.

3. Front Wheel - Both Side





1. Remove both front wheels.

4. Steering Joint Cover





1. Remove the steering joint cover (A).

5. Steering Column Lower Slide Shaft - Hold





1. Set the steering column to the center tilt position, and to the center telescopic position.

2. Hold the lower slide shaft (A) on the column with a piece of wire (B) between the joint yoke (C) of the lower slide shaft and the joint yoke (D) of the upper shaft to prevent the lower slider shaft from pulling out.

6. Steering Wheel Hold





1. Center the steering wheel spoke angle.

2. Install a commercially available steering wheel holder tool (A).

7. Steering Joint - Disconnection





1. Remove the steering joint bolt (A).

2. Disconnect the steering joint (B) from the pinion shaft.

3. Remove the center guide (C) (if equipped), and discard it.

8. Ball Joint - Removal




NOTICE:
Always use a ball joint remover to disconnect a ball joint. Do not strike the housing or any other part of the ball joint connection to disconnect it.

1. Install a hex nut (A) or the ball joint thread protector.

NOTE: When using a hex nut, make sure the nut is flush with the ball joint pin end to prevent damage to the threaded end of the ball joint pin.





2. Apply grease to the ball joint remover on the areas shown (A).





3. Install the ball joint remover as shown.

NOTE:
* Fasten the safety tie (A) securely to a suspension arm or the subframe (B).
* Making sure not to damage the ball joint boot.

4. Tighten the pressure bolt until the ball joint pin pops loose from the ball joint connecting hole.

NOTE: Do not use pneumatic or electric tools on the pressure bolt.

5. Remove the ball joint remover.

6. Remove the hex nut or the ball joint thread protector.

7. Pull the ball joint out of the ball joint connecting hole.

9. Tie-Rod End Ball Joint - Disconnection, Both Side





1. Remove the cotter pin (A) from the tie-rod end ball joint.

2. Remove the nut (B).

3. Disconnect the tie-rod end ball joint.

NOTE: Be careful not to damage the ball joint boot when installing the remover.

10. Front Stabilizer Link Stabilizer Bar Side - Disconnection, Both Side





1. Remove the flange nuts (A) while holding the respective joint pin (B) with a hex wrench (C).

2. Disconnect both sides of the stabilizer link (D) from the front stabilizer bar (E).

11. Front Splash Shield





1. Remove the bolts (A), then remove the clips (B) that secure the front inner fender and the front splash shield (C) to the body.

2. From under the front bumper (D), remove the clips (E).

3. From under the body, remove the clips (F), then pull out the front splash shield.

12. Front Floor Undercover





1. Remove the bolts (A) and the clips (B, C) securing the front floor undercover (D), then remove the front floor undercover.

13. Under-Floor TWC Assembly





1. Remove the under-floor TWC.

14. Left Middle Floor Undercover (AWD/4WD)





1. Remove the bolts (A) and clips (B, C), then remove the left middle floor undercover (D).

15. Propeller Shaft Protector No.1 (AWD/4WD)





1. Remove the No. 1 propeller shaft protector (A).

16. Propeller Shaft Protector No.2 (AWD/4WD)





1. Remove the No. 2 propeller shaft protector (A).

17. Propeller Shaft Transmission Side - Disconnection (AWD/4WD)





1. Make reference mark (A) across the No. 1 propeller shaft (B) and the transfer companion flange (C).

2. Remove the No. 1 propeller shaft flange bolts (D).

18. Propeller Shaft Differential Side - Disconnection (AWD/4WD)





1. Make reference mark (A) across the No. 2 propeller shaft (B) and the rear differential companion flange (C).

2. Remove the No. 2 propeller shaft flange bolts (D).

19. Propeller Shaft Assembly (AWD/4WD)





1. Remove the center support bearing mounting bolts (A), then remove the propeller shaft assembly (B).

20. Power Steering Gearbox Items





NOTE: Wrap the connectors with vinyl tape to avoid contamination from grease or water.

1. Disconnect the EPS motor 3P connector (A) by pushing the lock (B) and pulling up the lever (C).

2. Disconnect the connectors (D).

3. Remove the harness clip (E).

Driver's side





Passenger's side





4. Remove the steering gearbox mounting bolts (A).

5. Remove the stiffener mounting bolts (B).

6. Remove the steering gearbox stiffeners (C).

21. Subframe Support





1. Attach the subframe adapter (A) to the front subframe by looping the belt (B) over the front of the front subframe (C), then secure the belt with its stop (D).

2. Raise the jack and line up the slots in the subframe adapter arms with the bolt holes on the jack base, then securely attach them with four bolts.

22. Lower Torque Rod - Disconnection





1. Remove the lower torque rod mount mounting bolts (A).

23. Front Subframe - Move





1. Remove the mid mounting bolts (A) on both sides.





2. Loosen the front subframe mounting bolts (A) so they are about 30 mm (1.18 in) from the mounting surface on both sides.

NOTE: Do not loosen the front subframe mounting bolts more than necessary.





3. Remove the front subframe mounting bolts (A) on both side.

4. Lower the jack slowly until the front subframe has dropped about 130 mm (5.12 in).

24. Pinion Shaft Grommet





1. Remove the pinion shaft grommet (A).

2. Wrap vinyl tape over the splines on the pinion shaft (B).

25. Power Steering Gearbox Assembly





1. Move the steering gearbox to the driver's side, and rotate it so the pinion shaft (A) points toward the rear of the vehicle.

2. Carefully move the steering gearbox (B) as an assembly toward the driver's side of the vehicle until the pinion shaft clears the wheelwell opening.

3. Remove the steering gearbox through the wheelwell opening on the driver's side.

26. Tie-Rod End





1. Loosen the locknut (A).

2. Remove the tie-rod end (B), then remove the locknut.

27. Rack End Boot





1. Remove the boot band (A).

2. Remove the tie-rod clip (B).

3. Pull the boot (C) away from the ends of the steering gearbox.

28. Rack End





1. Hold the gearbox housing using a C-clamp (A) to a workbench as shown.

NOTE: Do not clamp the cylinder part of the gearbox housing in a vise.





2. Unbend the lock washer (A).





3. Unscrew the rack end (A) with a wrench.

NOTE: Be careful not to damage the rack surface with the wrench.

4. Remove the lock washer (B).

5. Remove the spacer (C).

6. Remove the damper (D).
