Rear Differential Oil Seal Replacement - Driveshaft Side (KX Models 4WD)

Removal

1. Vehicle Lift

1. Raise the vehicle on a lift, and make sure it is securely supported.

2. Rear Differential Fluid - Replacement (Dual Pump System)

1. Remove the oil filler plug (A) and the sealing washer (B).

2. Remove the drain plug (A) and the sealing washer (B), then drain the rear differential fluid.

3. Propeller Shaft Rear Differential Side - Disconnection (With Nylon Strap)

1. Make a reference mark (A) across the No. 2 propeller shaft (B) and the rear differential companion flange (C).

2. Remove the No. 2 propeller shaft flange bolts (D).

3. Separate the No. 2 propeller shaft from the rear differential.

NOTE: Suspend the propeller shaft with an appropriate size nylon strap.

4. Rear Differential Breather Hoses

1. Disconnect the breather hoses (A) from the breather pipe (B) and clamps (C).

2. Disconnect the breather hose (A) from the clamp (B).

5. Rear Differential Jack Support

1. Place a transmission jack under the rear differential assembly.

6. Rear Differential Mount Bracket (DPS)

1. Remove the left and right rear differential mount brackets B.

2. Remove the mounting bolts (A) and the plates (B).

7. Rear Driveshaft Inboard Side Both - Disconnection

1. Lower the rear differential assembly (A) while pulling both rear driveshaft inboard joints (B) out of the rear differential assembly.

NOTE:
* Be careful not to damage the driveshaft ring (C) when prying out the driveshaft inboard joints.
* Be careful not to damage the oil seals (D).

2. Remove the set ring (A) from inboard joint.

8. Rear Differential Assembly

1. Remove the rear differential mount assembly A from the rear differential assembly (B).

9. Rear Differential Left Oil Seal (Dual Pump System)

1. Remove the rear differential left side oil seal (A) from the differential housing.

10. Rear Differential Right Oil Seal (Dual Pump System)

1. Remove the rear differential right side oil seal (A) from the differential housing.

Installation

1. Rear Differential Right Oil Seal (Dual Pump System)

1. Install a new rear differential right side oil seal (A) squarely using the 15 x 135L driver handle (B) and the 78 x 80 mm bearing driver attachment (C).

2. Installation depth (D) of the oil seal is 9mm(0.35 in) below the machined edge of the differential carrier assembly.

2. Rear Differential Left Oil Seal (Dual Pump System)

1. Install a new left side oil seal (A) even and flush with the machined edge of the differential carrier assembly using the 15 x 135L driver handle (B) and the oil seal driver attachment (C).

3. Rear Differential Assembly

1. Install the rear differential mount assembly A to the rear differential assembly (B) with new bolts.

4. Rear Driveshaft Inboard Side Both - Reconnection

1. Install new set ring (A) into the groove (B) of the rear driveshaft inboard joint on both side.

2. Lift the rear differential assembly (A) up into position.

3. Insert the inboard end (B) of the rear driveshafts (C) into the differential (D) until the set ring (E) locks in the groove (F).

NOTE: Insert the driveshaft horizontally to prevent damaging the oil seals (G).

5. Rear Differential Mount Bracket

1. Align the tabs (A) of the rubber mount (B) with the holes (C) of the plates (D).

2. Install the rear differential mounting bolts (E).

3. Install the left and right rear differential mount brackets B.

4. Tighten new differential mount brackets B mounting bolts (A) to the specified torque.

5. Loosely install new differential mount brackets B mounting bolt (C).

6. Rear Differential Mount Bolt - Tighten

1. Lower the transmission jack.

2. Tighten differential mount brackets B mounting bolt to the specified torque.

7. Rear Differential Peripheral Assembly

1. Connect the breather hose (A) to the breather pipe (B) and clamp (C).

2. Connect the breather hose (A) to the clamp (B).

8. Propeller Shaft Rear Differential Side - Reconnection (With Nylon Strap)

1. Attach the No. 2 propeller shaft (A) to the rear differential companion flange (B) by aligning the reference mark (C) you made during the removal procedure.

2. Install new flange bolts (D) to the specified torque.

9. Rear Differential Fluid - Replacement (Dual Pump System)

1. Clean the drain plug (A), then install it with a new sealing washer (B).

2. Refill the differential with rear differential fluid to the proper level.

NOTE: If you disassemble the differential, check the rear differential fluid level again after the 4WD system check is finished. Add fluid if necessary.

Recommended fluid: Honda Dual Pump Fluid II

3. Install the oil filler plug (A) with a new sealing washer (B).

10. HDS DLC - Connection

1. Connect the HDS to the data link connector (DLC) (A) located under the driver's side of the dashboard.

2. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).

3. Make sure the HDS communicates with the vehicle. If it does not communicate, go to the DLC circuit troubleshooting.
