Rear Differential Oil Seal Replacement - Propeller Shaft Side on Vehicle (KX Models 4WD)
Removal
1. Vehicle Lift
1. Raise the vehicle on a lift, and make sure it is securely supported.
2. Rear Differential Fluid - Replacement (Dual Pump System)
1. Remove the oil filler plug (A) and the sealing washer (B).
2. Remove the drain plug (A) and the sealing washer (B), then drain the rear differential fluid.
3. Propeller Shaft Rear Differential Side - Disconnection (With Nylon Strap)
1. Make a reference mark (A) across the No. 2 propeller shaft (B) and the rear differential companion flange (C).
2. Remove the No. 2 propeller shaft flange bolts (D).
3. Separate the No. 2 propeller shaft from the rear differential.
NOTE: Suspend the propeller shaft with an appropriate size nylon strap.
4. Rear Differential Companion Flange (Dual Pump System)
1. Pry up the stake on the locknut (A) from the groove of the clutch guide, making sure the tab completely clears the groove to prevent damaging the clutch guide.
2. Install the companion flange holder (A) and holder handle (B) on the companion flange.
3. Loosen the locknut (A) counterclockwise so its tab (B) comes out from the groove (C) in the clutch guide.
4. Tighten the locknut (A) until its tab (B) aligns with the groove (C).
5. Clean any dirt from inside the groove in the clutch guide, then loosen the locknut.
6. Remove the locknut (A), the spring washer (B), the back-up ring (C), the O-ring (D), and the companion flange (E).
5. Rear Differential Oil Seal Propeller Shaft Side (Dual Pump System)
1. Remove the rear differential propeller shaft side oil seal (A).
Installation
1. Rear Differential Oil Seal Propeller Shaft Side (Dual Pump System)
1. Install a new rear differential propeller shaft side oil seal (A) even and flush with the torque control differential (TCD) case using the 65 mm oil seal driver (B).
2. Rear Differential Companion Flange (Dual Pump System)
1. Install the companion flange (A) to the shaft of the clutch guide.
2. Apply Dual Pump Fluid II to a new O-ring (B).
3. Install the O-ring, a new back-up ring (C), the spring washer (D), and a new locknut (E).
4. Install the companion flange holder (A) and holder handle (B) on the companion flange.
5. Tighten the locknut to the specified torque.
6. Stake the locknut tab (A) into the groove in the clutch guide.
3. Propeller Shaft Rear Differential Side - Reconnection (With Nylon Strap)
1. Attach the No. 2 propeller shaft (A) to the rear differential companion flange (B) by aligning the reference mark (C) you made during the removal procedure.
2. Install new flange bolts (D) to the specified torque.
4. Rear Differential Fluid - Replacement (Dual Pump System)
1. Clean the drain plug (A), then install it with a new sealing washer (B).
2. Refill the differential with rear differential fluid to the proper level.
NOTE: If you disassemble the differential, check the rear differential fluid level again after the 4WD system check is finished. Add fluid if necessary.
Recommended fluid: Honda Dual Pump Fluid II
3. Install the oil filler plug (A) with a new sealing washer (B).
5. HDS DLC - Connection
1. Connect the HDS to the data link connector (DLC) (A) located under the driver's side of the dashboard.
2. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
