Rear Hub Bearing Unit Replacement
Removal
1. Vehicle Lift
1. Raise the vehicle on a lift, and make sure it is securely supported.
2. Rear Wheel
1. Remove the rear wheel.
3. Rear Driveshaft Spindle Nut
1. Pry up the stake (A) on the spindle nut (B), then remove the nut.
4. Rear Brake Caliper - Detach
1. Remove the brake hose mounting bolt (A).
2. Remove the caliper assembly (B).
NOTE:
* To prevent damage to the caliper assembly or brake hose, use a short piece of wire to hang the caliper assembly from the undercarriage.
* Do not twist the brake hose and the parking brake cable excessively.
5. Rear Brake Disc
1. Remove the brake disc/drum flathead screws (A).
2. Remove the brake disc/drum (B).
NOTE:
* Remove the adjuster plug (C), then if necessary, turn the adjuster bolt (D) with a flat-tip screwdriver until the shoes become loose.
* If the brake disc/drum is stuck to the hub bearing unit, thread two 8 x 1.25 mm bolts (E) into the brake disc/drum to push it away from the hub bearing unit. Turn each bolt 90 degrees at a time to prevent the brake disc/drum from binding.
6. Rear Hub Bearing Unit
2WD
1. 2WD : Remove the hub bearing unit (A).
NOTE: Keep the wheel bearing/encoder away from any magnetic field. Encoder can be damaged or erased.
AWD/4WD
2. AWD/4WD: Remove the hub bearing unit (A) by tapping the driveshaft end (B) with a soft face hammer while drawing the hub bearing unit outward.
NOTE: Keep the wheel bearing/encoder away from any magnetic field. Encoder can be damaged or erased.
Installation
1. Rear Hub Bearing Unit
2WD
AWD/4WD
1. Install the hub bearing unit (A).
NOTE: Keep the wheel bearing/encoder away from any magnetic field. Encoder can be damaged or erased.
2. Rear Brake Disc
1. Install the brake disc (A).
NOTE: Before installing the brake disc, clean the mating surfaces between the hub bearing unit and the inside of the brake disc.
3. Rear Brake Caliper - Reattach
1. Install the caliper assembly (A).
2. Install the brake hose mounting bolt (B).
4. Rear Driveshaft Spindle Nut
1. Apply a small amount of engine oil to the seating surface of a new spindle nut (A).
2. Install the spindle nut, then tighten it. After tightening, use a drift to stake the spindle nut shoulder (B) against the driveshaft.
5. Rear Wheel
1. Install the rear wheel.
NOTE: Before installing the wheel, clean the mating surfaces between the brake disc/drum and the inside of the wheel.
