Engine Removal and Installation

Removal

31. MTF Replacement (M/T)





1. Remove the drain plug (A) and the sealing washer (B), and drain the MTF.

2. Reinstall the drain plug with a new sealing washer.

32. ATF Replacement (A/T)





1. Remove the drain plug (A), and drain the ATF.

2. Reinstall the drain plug using a new sealing washer (B).

33. Exhaust Pipe A





1. Remove exhaust pipe A.

34. Shift Cable Cover (A/T)





1. Remove the shift cable cover (A).

35. Shift Cable A/T Side - Disconnection





1. Pry up the lock tab of the lock washer (A).

2. Remove the lock bolt (B) and the lock washer.

3. Separate the shift cable (C) from the selector control shaft (D).

NOTE: Do not bend the shift cable excessively.

4. Remove the shift cable holder (E).

36. Front Stabilizer Ball Joint - Disconnection, Both Lower Arm Side





1. Remove the flange nut (A) while holding the respective joint pin (B) with a hex wrench (C).

2. Remove the stabilizer link (D).

37. Ball Joint - Removal




NOTICE:
Always use a ball joint remover to disconnect a ball joint. Do not strike the housing or any other part of the ball joint connection to disconnect it.

1. Install a hex nut (A) or the ball joint thread protector.

NOTE: When using a hex nut, make sure the nut is flush with the ball joint pin end to prevent damage to the threaded end of the ball joint pin.





2. Apply grease to the ball joint remover on the areas shown (A).





3. Install the ball joint remover as shown.

NOTE:
* Fasten the safety chain (A) securely to a suspension arm or the subframe (B).
* Making sure not to damage the ball joint boot.

4. Tighten the pressure bolt until the ball joint pin pops loose from the ball joint connecting hole.

NOTE: Do not use pneumatic or electric tools on the pressure bolt.

5. Remove the ball joint remover.

6. Remove the hex nut or the ball joint thread protector.

7. Pull the ball joint out of the ball joint connecting hole.

38. Tie-Rod End Ball Joint - Disconnection, Both Side





1. Remove the cotter pin (A) from the tie-rod end ball joint.

2. Remove the nut (B).

3. Disconnect the tie-rod end ball joint.

NOTE: Be careful not to damage the ball joint boot when installing the remover.

39. Lower Arm Joint - Disconnection, Both Knuckle Side





1. Remove the flange bolt and the self-locking nuts on both sides.

2. Separate the lower arm using a pry bar on both sides.

40. Front Driveshaft Spindle Nut Both





1. Pry up the stake (A) on the spindle nut (B) on both sides.

2. Remove the spindle nut on both sides.

41. Front Driveshaft Both Outboard Side - Disconnection





1. Separate the outboard joint from the front hub using a soft face hammer on both side.





2. Pull the knuckle outward.

3. Separate the outboard joint from the front hub on both side.

42. Driveshaft Front Both - Disconnection Inboard Side









1. Left driveshaft: Pry the inboard joint (A) from the differential using a pry bar. Remove the driveshaft as an assembly.

NOTE:
* Do not pull on the driveshaft (B), or the inboard joint may come apart. Pull the inboard joint straight out to avoid damaging the oil seal.
* Be careful not to damage the oil seal or the end of the inboard joint using the pry bar.

2. Left drive shaft: Remove the set ring (C) from the inboard joint.

3. Right driveshaft (with intermediate shaft): Drive the inboard joint (A) off of the intermediate shaft using a drift punch and a hammer.

4. Right drive shaft (without intermediate shaft): Pry the inboard joint (B) from the differential using the pry bar.

NOTE:
* Do not pull on the driveshaft (C), or the inboard joint may come apart.
* Be careful not to damage the oil seal or the end of the inboard using the pry bar.

5. Remove the driveshaft as an assembly.

6. Right driveshaft (with intermediate shaft): Remove the set ring (D) from the intermediate shaft.

7. Right drive shaft (without intermediate shaft): Remove the set ring (E) from the inboard joint.

43. Lower The Vehicle On The Lift

1. Lower the vehicle on the lift.

44. Radiator Mounting Bracket, Upper Both





1. Remove the radiator mount upper brackets/cushions (A), and the A/C condenser upper mount brackets (B).

45. Bulkhead - Removal





1. Disconnect the connectors (A).

2. Remove the harness clamps (B).





3. Remove the bulkhead (A).

46. Radiator Assembly





1. Disconnect the upper radiator hose.





2. Disconnect the lower radiator hose (A).

3. Disconnect the ECT sensor 2 connector (B).

4. Remove the harness clamp (C).

5. Without ATF warmer: Disconnect the ATF cooler hoses (D).





6. Pull up the radiator assembly.

47. A/C Compressor Assembly - Move





1. Disconnect the connector.

2. Remove the harness clamp.

3. Remove the A/C compressor (A) without disconnecting the A/C hoses. Do not bend the A/C hoses excessively.

NOTE: Hang the A/C compressor with a wire tie.

48. Heater Hose - Disconnection, Engine Side





1. Disconnect the heater hoses (A).

49. Bulkhead - Temporary Install





1. Install the front bulkhead.

50. Engine Support Hanger Peripheral Assembly









1. Remove the harness holders (A).

2. Disconnect the connectors (B).

3. Move the harness holder (C).

4. Remove the bracket (D).

51. Engine Support Hanger





1. Attach the universal lifting eyelet to the cylinder head.





2. Install the engine support hanger as shown.

3. Attach the hook to the slotted hole in the universal lifting eyelet.

4. Tighten the wing nut (A) by hand, and lift and support the engine/transmission.

NOTE: Be careful when working around the windshield.

52. Steering Joint Cover





1. Remove the steering joint cover (A).

53. Steering Column Lower Slide Shaft - Hold





1. Set the steering column to the center tilt position, and to the center telescopic position.

2. Hold the lower slide shaft (A) on the column with a piece of wire (B) between the joint yoke (C) of the lower slide shaft and the joint yoke (D) of the upper shaft to prevent the lower slider shaft from pulling out.

54. Steering Joint Bolt - Loosen





1. Loosen the steering joint bolt (A).

55. Steering Wheel Hold





1. Center the steering wheel spoke angle.

2. Install a commercially available steering wheel holder tool (A).

56. Steering Joint - Disconnection





1. Remove the steering joint bolt (A).

2. Disconnect the steering joint (B) from the pinion shaft.

NOTE:
* If the center guide (C) is in place and has not moved, leave it in place.
* If the center guide has come off, discard it.

57. Raise The Vehicle On The Lift

1. Raise the vehicle on the lift.

58. Lower Torque Rod - Disconnection





1. Remove the lower torque rod mounting bolts (A).

59. Subframe Support





1. Attach the subframe adapter to the front subframe by looping the belt (A) over the front of the front subframe (B), then secure the belt with its stop (C).

2. Raise the jack and line up the slots in the subframe adapter arms with the bolt holes on the jack base, then securely attach them with four bolts.

60. Front Subframe Assembly





1. Loosen the mid-stiffener mounting bolt (A) on both sides.





2. Disconnect the EPS connectors.





3. Lower the front subframe.

61. Lower The Vehicle On The Lift

1. Lower the vehicle on the lift.

62. Mounting Bracket, Engine Side





1. Remove the ground cable (A), the side engine mount bracket (B), and the side engine mount (C).

63. Chain Hoist





1. Attach the universal lifting eyelet to the threaded hole (A) on the cylinder head.

M/T





A/T





2. Attach a chain hoist with the engine hanger stay to the universal lifting eyelet (A), and the transmission hanger (B).

3. Lift the engine/transmission until it is securely supported by the chain hoist.

4. Remove the engine support hanger and the universal lifting eyelet.

64. Transmission Mount (M/T)

1. Remove the transmission mount bracket mounting bolt and the nuts (A).

65. Transmission Mount (A/T)

A/T





1. Remove the transmission mount bracket mounting bolt and the nuts (A).

66. Engine Removal

1. Check that the engine/transmission is completely free of the vacuum hoses, the fuel hoses, the coolant hoses, and the electrical wiring.

2. Slowly lower the engine/transmission about 150 mm (5.91 in). Check once again that all the hoses and the electrical wiring are disconnected and free from the engine/transmission, then lower it all the way and support it.

3. Disconnect the chain hoist from the engine/transmission.

4. Raise the vehicle, and remove the engine/transmission from under the vehicle.
