CHECK FUEL CAP Message Comes On Repeatedly Without a DTC
(Supersedes 11-067, dated November 2,2011, to revise the information marked by the black bars or asterisks)

SYMPTOM

The CHECK FUEL CAP message repeatedly comes on without a confirmed or pending DTC stored.

POSSIBLE CAUSE

Carbon dust has contaminated the EVAP canister purge valve.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Replace the EVAP canister purge valve, the EVAP canister, and the purge joint. Then, blow out the purge lines with compressed air.

PARTS INFORMATION

EVAP Canister Purge Valve:
P/N 36162-RMX-A01

EVAP Canister:
(Includes three 0-rings, a cap, and a retainer)
P/N 17011-TK8-A01

EVAP Purge Joint:
P/N 36166-RKG-A01





WARRANTY CLAIM INFORMATION

The normal warranty applies.

DIAGNOSIS

1. Has the CHECK FUEL CAP message come on repeatedly?

Yes - Go to step 2.

No - This service bulletin does not apply; continue with normal troubleshooting.

2. Are there pending or confirmed PGM-FI DTCs stored?

Yes - This service bulletin does not apply; continue with normal troubleshooting.

No - Go to step 3.





3. Disconnect the hoses and the 2P connector from the EVAP canister purge valve.

4. Remove the EVAP canister purge valve assembly.





5. Lightly tap the valve inlet on a clean white cloth or a piece of paper.

Does carbon dust come out of the EVAP canister purge valve inlet?

Yes - Go to REPAIR PROCEDURE.

No - This service bulletin does not apply; continue with normal troubleshooting.

REPAIR PROCEDURE





1. Remove the EVAP purge joint:

^ Disconnect the purge joint hoses.

^ On the bottom of the purge joint, press down on the tab to release it from the purge joint mounting bracket.





2. Blow out the 900 EVAP purge joint hose with compressed air.

3. Install the new purge joint onto its mounting bracket.

4. Remove the original EVAP canister purge valve from its bracket, then install the new valve. Torque the bolts to 3.4 N.m (2.5 lb-ft).

5. Reinstall the EVAP canister purge valve assembly; connect the 2P connector, then torque the nuts to 10 N.m (7 lb-ft).





6. Connect all the hoses except for the one connecting the purge joint to the EVAP canister.

7. Raise the vehicle on a lift.





8. Remove the EVAP canister cover.





9. Disconnect the two quick-connect fittings, the hoses, and the EVAP canister vent shut valve 2P connector, and remove the harness clamp.

10. Remove the EVAP canister assembly.





11. Remove the EVAP canister from the bracket.





12. Remove the EVAP canister vent shut valve and the FTP sensor from the EVAP canister.

13. Install the FTP sensor and vent shut valve on the new EVAP canister.

NOTE:

^ Use new O-rings, a new cap, and a new retainer.

^ Do not coat the O-rings with oil.

14. Reinstall the EVAP canister bracket, and torque the nuts to 22 N.m (16 lb-ft).

NOTE:
Do not install the EVAP canister on the vehicle.

15. Lower the vehicle.





16. Using compressed air, carefully blow out the purge hose that was left disconnected.

17. After cleaning out the purge hose, connect it to the inlet of the purge joint.

18. Raise the vehicle on a lift.

19. Reinstall the EVAP canister assembly, and torque the bolts to 16 N.m (12 lb-ft).

20. Reconnect the quick-connect fitting, the hoses, and the EVAP canister vent shut valve 2P connector.

21. Reinstall the EVAP canister cover, and torque the bolts to 9.5 N.m (7 lb-ft).
