A/T Differential Backlash Inspection

NOTE: To prevent damage to the inboard joint, always use soft jaws or equivalent materials between the inboard joint and a bench vise.

1. Install the left side driveshaft inboard joint and the right side driveshaft into the differential assembly.

2. Secure the driveshaft inboard joint (A) in a bench vise (B) with soft jaws (C).





3. Place the right side driveshaft (D) on a V-block (E), then hold the right side driveshaft using locking pliers (F).

4. Measure the backlash of the final driven gear (G) using a dial indicator (H).





- If the backlash is within the standard, go to step 5.
- If the backlash is out of the standard, replace the differential assembly.

5. Remove the driveshaft inboard joint from the bench vise.

6. Remove the left side driveshaft inboard joint and the right side driveshaft from the differential assembly.

NOTE: Make sure the driveshaft inboard joint and the inboard boot are not damaged. If any damage is found, replace the driveshaft inboard joint or the inboard boot as an assembly.
