Electrical - Trailer Brakes Apply When Spot Lamps are ON

Bulletin No.: 04-08-42-003

Date: February 13, 2004

TECHNICAL

Subject:
Trailer Brakes Applied When GM Accessory Roof-Mounted Off-Road Spot Lamps are On (Modify Roof-Mounted Off-Road Spot Lamp Wiring Harness)

Models:
2003 HUMMER H2

with Roof-Mounted Off-Road Spot Lamp Package

Condition

Some customers may comment that when the roof-mounted off-road spot lamps are on, the electronic brakes on the trailer are always applied.

Cause

The cause of this condition may be due to the roof-mounted off-road spot lamp wiring harness and the electronic brake controller wiring harness using the same Mid BEC connector cavity. If a customer attempts to tow a trailer equipped with electronic brakes and does not use a controller (requiring them to remove the roof-mounted off-road spot lamp wiring harness from the Mid BEC), the trailer's electronic brakes will be activated when the Roof-Mounted Off-Road Spot Lamps are turned on.

Correction

To prevent activation of the trailer's electronic brakes, a modification to the off-road spot lamp wiring harness must be performed. Use the procedure listed below.

1. Remove the lower left side I/P MID-BEC (electrical center) cover.

2. Remove the brown connector (C7) from the MID-BEC.

3. Remove the blue terminal lock from the connector.

4. Remove the purple wire (CKT 2234) and terminal from cavity C in the connector.

5. Reinstall the terminal lock into the connector.

6. Cut the terminal off the purple wire.

7. Insert the purple wire into heat shrink tubing and heat the tubing until it sufficiently wraps the wire.

8. Tape the purple wire back 75 mm (3 in) from the connector.

9. Reconnect the connector into the MID-BEC. Make sure the connector is fully seated and engaged.
