Relay Rod Replacement


Special Tools
* J 24319-B Steering Linkage and Tie Rod Puller
* J 29193 Steering Linkage Installer (12 mm)
* J 29194 Steering Linkage Installer (14 mm)



Removal Procedure

1. Remove the steering linkage shock absorber. Refer to Steering Linkage Shock Absorber Replacement (Service and Repair) .
2. Disconnect the steering linkage outer tie rods from the steering knuckles. Refer to Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement (Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement) .




3. Remove the pitman arm nut and discard it.




4. Remove the idler arm nut and discard it.
5. Separate the relay rod from the pitman arm and idler arm using puller J 24319-B .
6. Remove the relay rod from the vehicle.
7. Inspect for any damage on the steering linkage components and repair or replace as needed.
8. Clean all threads on the steering linkage components.



Installation Procedure

1. Place the relay rod to the vehicle.





Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice (Fastener Notice) .

2. Use installer J 29193 or installer J 29194 to seat the idler arm and pitman arm to the relay rod.

Tighten the installer to 54 N.m (40 lb ft).





3. Install the new pitman arm nut.

Tighten the nut to 60 N.m (44 lb ft).

4. Install the new idler arm nut.

Tighten the nut to 60 N.m (44 lb ft).

5. Connect the steering linkage outer tie rods to the steering knuckles. Refer to Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement (Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement) .
6. Install the steering linkage shock absorber. Refer to Steering Linkage Shock Absorber Replacement (Service and Repair) .
7. Adjust the front toe. Refer to Front Toe Adjustment (Front Toe Adjustment) .
