AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE P0885 & P1723

This bulletin supersedes TSB 03-40-014 to add DTC P0885 in formation.

DESCRIPTION:

DTC P0885 or P1723 (A/T control relay open/short) is set if the output voltage to the solenoids is less than 7 volts. P0885 or P1723 may be accompanied by the following symptoms:

^ MIL illuminated

^ Transaxle held in 3rd gear fail-safe

^ Harsh shift into Reverse or Drive

If you are servicing a vehicle with these symptoms, follow the repair procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

1. Refer to the applicable ETM and check the A/T control relay fuse in the engine compartment (for other model years, refer to the applicable ETM) shown.

2. If the fuse is as shown.

3. Refer to the ETM previously shown and check the control wiring harness for a short to ground between the:

^ Fuse and TCM/PCM

^ Fuse, A/T control relay and solenoid connector on the transaxle. Repair or replace the harness if an open or short to ground is found.

NOTE:
FOR 1999 SONATA ONLY: If the wiring harness does not have an open or a short circuit, go to Step 4.

REPAIR PROCEDURE FOR BLOWN (OPEN CIRCUIT) A/T CONTROL RELAY FUSE: (1999 Sonata only)

NOTE:
The solenoid harness is unique for Sonatas produced prior to 5/13/99.

4. Drain the engine coolant from the radiator.

5. Remove the lower radiator hose from the radiator.

6. Drain the ATF.

7. Remove the valve body cover from the transaxle.

8. Remove the manual control shaft detent.

9. Inspect the solenoid harness wiring in the area beneath the control shaft detent. Check for a possible short circuit against the edge of the valve body.

10. If the harness insulation is damaged, go to Step 11. If not, go to Step 24.

11. Disconnect the control harness at the solenoid connector.

12. Remove the snap ring to the solenoid connector.

13. Disconnect the connectors to the solenoids and temperature sensor on the valve body.

14. Remove all the valve body bolts except the four brass bolts shown.

15. Remove the valve body and gasket.

16. Remove the solenoid harness.

17. Install the new solenoid harness. Insert the connector into the transaxle case and install the snap ring.

18. Confirm the two steel balls are installed on the valve body.

19. Install a new valve body gasket, P/N 46264-39510, to the valve body.

20. Carefully align the manual valve on the valve body to the manual control shaft and reinstall the valve body.

21. Install the valve body and tighten the valve body bolts to 7-8 lb.ft (10-120 kg.cm).

22. Reconnect the solenoid harness to the solenoids and oil temperature sensor on the valve body.

23. Adjust the solenoid harness to prevent contact with either the valve body or control shaft detent. Reconnect the control harness to the solenoid connector on the transaxle.

24. Reinstall the control shaft detent.

25. Apply Permatex Ultra Gray Gasket Sealant or Hyundai Ultra Gray Gasket Sealant, (P/N 00231-13800) to the valve body cover and reinstall the cover. Tighten the bolts to 6-7 lb.ft (80-100 kg.cm).

26. Reinstall the radiator hose and add engine coolant to the radiator.

27. Add Hyundai SP-III ATF and check the fluid level with the engine idling and transaxle in Neutral, with the parking brake applied.

28. Test drive the vehicle until the ATF is at normal operating temperature (70-100°C, 159-212°F). Adjust the ATF level to within the "HOT" mark on the dipstick.
