Recall - Catalytic Convertor Inspection/Replacement

Description:

This Technical Service Bulletin provides the procedures necessary for inspecting and replacing the catalytic converter on 1991 California Specification Sonatas.

Inspection:

1. Lift the vehicle and inspect the catalytic converter's manufacture date code located on the bottom side of the converter. If the manufacture date code is after the date shown below, do not replace the catalytic converter. If the catalytic converter was manufactured before the date shown, proceed to step 2.

SONATA DATE CODE : (900914) SEPTEMBER 14, 1990

2. Remove and inspect the catalytic converter for damage.

Evidence of damage is:

^ A rattling noise from inside the catalytic converter while shaking.
^ A crack in the catalyst.
^ If the catalytic retention mat cannot be seen while shining a flashlight on it.
^ If light cannot be seen when looking through the catalytic converter.

If any of the above damage has occurred, replace the catalytic converter, gasket, and nuts. If no damage has occurred, reinstall the catalytic converter with a new gasket and nuts.

3. Lower the vehicle and start it, check for any exhaust leaks that may come from the catalytic converter. Repair as necessary.





4. Raise the hood and place a punch mark over the 14th character on the firewall identification plate. This will indicate that the campaign procedures have been completed.

5. An authorized Modifications Label will need to be applied to the underside of the hood. Wipe the surface clean before applying the new label.

6. On the Authorized Modifications Label, you will need to write in the following information:

CHANGE AUTHORITY: 023
DEALER CODE: YOUR DEALER CODE
REPAIR DATE: THE DATE OF THE REPAIR

Remove the backing from the clear adhesive on the front of the label, and press down on the label.





7. Fill out the California Vehicle Emission Recall - Proof of Correction form as illustrated.

California residents who own an affected vehicle may be required to send a Vehicle Emission Recall - Proof of Correction form to the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) as evidence of recall completion when they apply for vehicle registration renewal. Each customer whose vehicle is registered within California must be given a completed Vehicle Emission Recall - Proof of Correction form after the recall has been completed. Packages of this form have been sent to California dealers along with this bulletin. Additional forms are available by contacting your Field Technical Managers (FTM).

Note:
This form MUST be completed by the Dealership's Service Manager using a permanent ink pen. A fine point pen is recommended. when filling in the information, copy the information directly from the vehicle, NOT the repair order. ALL INFORMATION MUST BE PRINTED AND NEAT.

DO NOT COMPLETE THE FORM UNLESS THE RECALL WORK IS COMPLETED!

2. Enter "HYUNDAI"
3. Enter the vehicle's model year "1991"
4. Enter "SONATA"
5. Enter the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).

Note:
1 digit per box, and the digits must be legible. (Use a fine point pen.)

6. Enter "023"
7. Enter your dealership's name.
8. Enter your dealership's physical address. (Not the mailing address.)
9. Enter date of repair.
10. Sign the form
