SONATA V6 TIMING
DO NOT HAVE THE MULTI-USE TESTER CONNECTED WHILE TIMING A V6 SONATA.
Basic ignition timing is to be set using a timing light. Do not have the MUT connected or use the MUT reading. If the MUT is connected it will cause an incorrect basic ignition timing reading.
Be sure to ground the ignition timing adjustment terminal located in the engine compartment before timing the engine.
The basic ignition timing specification as seen with a timing light should be set at 5~ +/- 2~ BTDC.
The "ignition timing at idle: 15~ BTDC" given in the 1989/1990 and 1991 V6 Shop Manual is what is called the "actual ignition timing" (the timing read on the MUT) and is NOT to be used for setting basic ignition timing. The actual ignition timing varies depending on the control mode of the engine control unit.
