Free Running Test

1. Place starter motor in a suitable soft-jawed vise and connect a fully charged 12 volt battery to starter motor.

2. Connect a test ammeter (100 ampere scale) and carbon pile rheostat, Fig. 6.
3. Connect a voltmeter (15 volt scale) across starter motor.
4. Rotate carbon pile rheostat to Off position and connect a battery cable from battery negative post to starter motor body ground.
5. Adjust rheostat until battery voltage reads 11 volts.
6. Ensure maximum amperage is within specification and starter motor turns smoothly.
