Wheel Hub: Service and Repair

1. Remove driveshaft nut, then raise and support front of vehicle, remove front wheels.
2. Disconnect brake caliper assembly and support using suitable wire.

3. Disconnect tie rod end from knuckle using a suitable tie rod end puller, Fig. 2.
4. Using tie rod end puller, disconnect lower arm ball joint from knuckle.
5. Using axle shaft puller tool No. 09526-11001, or equivalent, remove driveshaft from hub.
6. Remove hub and knuckle as an assembly from strut assembly.
7. Using front hub remover and installer tool No. 09517-21500 and knuckle arm bridge tool No. 09517-21600, or equivalents, separate hub from steering knuckle.
8. Using bearing puller tool No. 09532-11000, puller cup tool No. 09532-11301 and hub bearing remover tool No. 09517-21100, or equivalents, remove outer bearing inner race from hub.
9. Remove oil seal and inner bearing inner race from steering knuckle.
10. Drive bearing outer races from steering knuckle using suitable drift. If either inner or outer races require replacement, they must be replaced as a set.
11. Apply suitable grease to outer surface of bearing outer race, then drive race into steering knuckle.
12. Install brake disc to hub and tighten retaining bolts to specifications.
13. Apply suitable grease to bearings and inside surface of hub, then position outer bearing inner race into steering knuckle.
14. Drive hub side oil seal into steering knuckle, then apply suitable grease to seal lip and hub contact areas.
15. Install inner bearing into knuckle.
16. Using tool hub remover and installer tool No. 09517-21500, or equivalent, assemble hub to steering knuckle. Torque nut on tool to 167 ft. lbs., then rotate hub to seat bearing.
17. Measure bearing starting torque. Starting torque should be 11 inch lbs. If starting torque is 0 inch lbs., measure hub axial play. Axial play should be 0.004 inch with tool nut torqued to specification as in previous step.
18. If starting torque or hub axial play is not within specification, repeat service procedures.
19. Remove service tool, then apply suitable grease to bearing and inside surface of steering knuckle.
20. Drive driveshaft side oil seal into steering knuckle until it contacts bearing outer race, then apply suitable grease to lip of seal.
21. Reverse steps 1 through 6 to install wheel hub and steering knuckle assembly.
