Group: TRANSAXLE

Number: 96-40-002-2

Date: NOVEMBER, 1996

Model: 1996 ACCENT

Subject
SHIFT QUALITY IMPROVEMENT FOR 1996 ACCENTS WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLES

THIS TSB HAS BEEN REVISED TO CLARIFY THAT THIS PROCEDURE APPLIES TO 1996 MODEL YEAR ACCENTS ONLY.

DESCRIPTION:

A modified Transaxle Control Module (TCM) is available for the 1996 Accent to reduce shift shock and/or delay during the following conditions:

1. Shift shock after shifting from P-D or N-D, then accelerating.

2. Shift shock after shifting from R-D while rolling backwards at 1-3 mph.

3. Shift shock during 2-1 downshift.

4. Excessive delay (more than 1.5 seconds) and shift shock when shifting from P-R or P-D (also N-R or N-D).

CAUTION:
The modified TCM is OBDII Compliant, and therefore, it cannot be used on 1995 Accent models.

NOTE:
Excessive delay and/or shift shock may also be caused by an ATF oil temperature sensor that is out of specification. Prior to changing the TCM, test the ATF oil temperature sensor

SERVICE PROCEDURE:

Using a 10 mm socket, remove the three bolts that mount the TCM under the drivers side of the lower crash pad, to the left of the brake pedal.

PARTS INFORMATION:

CAUTION:
THE MODIFIED TCM IS OBDII COMPLIANT, AND THEREFORE, IT CANNOT BE USED ON 1995 ACCENT MODELS.
