IMPROVED SHIFT ENGAGEMENT LOGIC IN TRANSAXLE CONTROL MODULE

This TSB supersedes TSB # 97-40-011 to correct the TCM part number for 1995 2.0 & 3.0L Sonata.

DESCRIPTION:

An updated Transaxle Control Module (TCM) has been designed to improve automatic transaxle shift quality and is applicable to some 1995 and all 1996 model Hyundais (see parts table for application). The new logic is designed to reduce the engagement time during the Park/Reverse or Park/Drive (also Neutral/Reverse, Neutral/Drive) commands.

SERVICE INFORMATION:

The following procedures should be followed prior to replacing the TCM:

^ Using a digital stopwatch, measure the engagement time from P/D and P/R (N/R and N/D). If the delay time EXCEEDS 1.5 seconds, proceed to the next step. If the delay is less than 1.5 seconds, the transaxle is within specification.

Excessive Engagement Time For P/D or N/D:

1. Confirm that the idle speed is set to specification: For 1995-96 Sonata refer to the Fuel System section of the appropriate Shop Manual. For 1996 Accent or 1996 Elantra, refer to the Monotronic EFI Training Manual.

2. Check ATM Oil Temperature Sensor, (Refer to TSB # 95-40-009, ATM Fluid Temperature Sensor Operation & Diagnosis Procedures).

3. If the above procedures did not decrease the delay to within the 1.5 second standard, and the vehicle was produced PRIOR to the Effective Production Date, (see attached parts table) replace the TCM. If the vehicle was produced AFTER the Effective Production Date, replace the transaxle.

Excessive Engagement Time For P/R or N/R:

1. If the vehicle was produced PRIOR to the Effective Production Date, replace the TCM. If the vehicle was produced AFTER the Effective Production Date, replace the transaxle.
