SUBJECT

A/T SHIFT LEVER WILL NOT
SHIFT OUT OF PARK

If a 1996 1999 Accent, Elantra, or Tiburon, equipped with an automatic transaxle, does not shift out of the Park position when the ignition key is in the "ON" position and the brake pedal is depressed, confirm the customers comments by following the procedure described below in the order given:

1. Start the engine

2. Press the brake pedal

3. Fully depress the shift release button and move the shift lever out of Park

Note:
If pressure is applied to the shift lever before depressing the brake pedal, the shift lever may bind against the shift lock mechanism and prevent shift lever movement.

If you confirm that this condition does exist, follow the service procedure below.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Confirm the following fuses are not blown. Replace the fuses if necessary.

Accent

- Fuse # 4 (Stop Lamp)
- Fuse # 10 (Cluster)
- Fuse # 14 (ATM Interlock)

Elantra/Tiburon

- Fuse # 3 (Stop Lamp)
- Fuse # 9 (Backup Lamp)
- Fuse # 14 (ATM Interlock)

2. Locate the A/T Shift Lock Module under the dash.

3. Confirm there is battery voltage at the Blue/Black (L/B) wire (pin # 4) of the A/T Shift Lock Module with the ignition key ON. If there is no voltage, repair the wiring.

If yes, check for proper grounds at G04 and G05 (refer to the appropriate electrical schematic for locations).

4. Test the Stop Lamp Switch signal:

Back-probe the Green (G) wire of the A/T Shift Lock Module with the positive lead of a voltmeter. Place the negative lead of the voltmeter to a good ground.

^ If the voltage readings are within specification, go to step # 5.

^ If the voltage readings are not within specification, test the voltage at the Stop Lamp Switch and replace if necessary.

^ If the Stop Lamp Switch is o.k., repair the wiring.

5. Test the A/T Shift Lock Solenoid signal:

Back-probe the Red/Green (R/G) wire of the A/T Shift Lock Module with the positive lead of a voltmeter. Place the negative lead of the voltmeter to a good ground.

^ If the voltage readings are within specification, go to step # 6.

^ If the voltage readings are not within specification, test the voltage at the A/T Shift Lock Solenoid and replace if necessary.

^ If the A/T Shift Lock Solenoid is o.k., repair the wiring.

6. Test the Park Position Switch signal:

Back-probe the Red (R) wire (pin # 8) of the A/T Shift Lock Module with the positive lead of a voltmeter. Place the negative lead of the voltmeter to a good ground.

^ If the voltage readings are within specification, go to step # 7.

^ If the voltage readings are not within specification, check for proper ground at G04 and G0S then test the voltage at the Park Position Switch and replace if necessary (refer to the appropriate electrical schematic).

^ If the Park Position Switch is o.k., repair the wiring.

7. If all components and checks test o.k., replace the A/T Shift and Key Lock Control Module.
