Subject
1999 SONATA KEYLESS ENTRY SYSTEM
DESCRIPTION:
This bulletin describes the installation, programming and operation instructions for the keyless entry system on the 1999 Sonata.
The installation modifies the basic operation of the factory door locks. Locking or unlocking of the driver's door with the key will not have an effect on the other doors. Using the key in the passenger door will operate ALL 4 door locks.
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS:
Refer to the Sonata Shop Manual Volume 2 or Electrical Troubleshooting Manual (ETM) for detailed information on harness connector locations.
Included in the kit:
- Keyless entry system CPU
- Two (2) remote controls
- Wireloom
- Piezo with two-sided tape
- Hardware kit with wire ties and alcohol swab
Required Tools:
- Wire cutters
- Long thin screwdriver or pick
PROCEDURE:
1. Locate the white door jamb connector MDO1 in the driver's kick panel access hole. This is the door harness connector MDO1 shown in photo 1. If you cannot fit your hand in the opening to release the connector, use a long thin screwdriver or pick to push on the release tab where the arrow in photo 1 indicates and pull firmly on the wireloom to unplug the connector. (The door locks may activate when the connector is unplugged.
2. Mate the MDO1 to the same style connector on the keyless entry system harness as shown in photo 2.
3. Locate the M03 connector at the back of the ignition cylinder as shown by the arrow in photo 3.
4. Unplug the M03 and mate it to the same style connector on the keyless entry system harness as shown in photo 4.
5. Mount the control unit above the fuse panel and secure using the wire ties provided in the kit as shown in photos 5a and 5b.
6. Remove the three screws from the driver's kick panel as shown in photo 6 and carefully place the kick panel out of the way.
7. Remove the sound deadening patch and foam from the driver's kick panel cavity as shown in photo 7 and save these so they may be reinstalled later.
8. Carefully remove the rubber grommet from the driver's kick panel cavity. Be sure not to drop it Using a pair of sharp cutters, cut a hole in the center of the grommet approximately 3/8" in diameter as shown in photo 8.
9. Using a piece of scrap wire cut about 3 feet long, thread the scrap wire through the hole in the driver's kick panel cavity that was previously tilled by the grommet. Slip the grommet over the wire and slide it down the wire through the doorjamb to the hole it was in previously as shown in photo 9. The wire prevents you from dropping the grommet. Make sure that the grommet is fully seated, then remove the scrap wire.
10. Reach through the door jamb and pull the black weather-strip toward the back of the car (in the direction of the arrow shown in photo 10) so that it covers as much of the grommet as possible.
11. Using the supplied alcohol swab, clean the drivers kick panel cavity metal around the hole directly behind the grommet as shown in photo 11.
12. Remove the backing from the two-sided tape and firmly press the piezo into the driver's kick panel cavity making sure that the piezo is centered on the hole as shown in photo 12. Make sure the wires for the piezo face down.
13. Run the red and black wires from the alarm's wireloom over to the kick panel cavity and plug the wires into the piezo. Replace the sound deadening patch and foam. Replace the kick panel.
14. Cut excess tails off of tie wraps.
15. Hang the antenna wire down behind plastic kick panel for maximum remote control range.
16. Tie up any loose wires and check for proper operation of brake pedal, accelerator pedal and steering wheel. Make sure nothing will rattle.
17. Test the system as follows:
- Press button 1, all doors will lock and you will hear two beeps
- Press button 1 again, the driver's door only will unlock with one beep
- Press button 2, all doors unlock
NOTE: The white and black wires must remain DISCONNECTED for normal operation.
PROGRAMMING A NEW REMOTE:
1. Plug a programming valet switch (p/n 00243-16130) into the white and black wires. If you don't have a valet switch, just tap the black and white wires together to count as a "click".
2. Turn on the ignition and flick the programming switch on/off 13 times.
3. Press button 1 on the remote.
4. Turn off the ignition. Press button 1. If the doors lock/unlock continue to step 5. If not, repeat steps 2-4.
5. Turn on the ignition and flick the programming switch on/off 14 times.
6. Press button 2 on the remote.
7. Turn off the ignition. Press button 1. The driver's door should unlock (if it locked, press button 1 again to unlock). Then press button 2. All other doors should unlock. If not, repeat steps 5-7.
8. Remove the programming switch and leave the white and black wires disconnected.
NOTE: If the wires are left connected, the remote control may not operate correctly.
OPERATION INSTRUCTIONS:
1. To Lock All Doors: After you exit the vehicle, press button 1 on the Hyundai keychain remote control and all of the doors will lock. Locking is confirmed with two unobstrusive but clearly audible electronic beeps.
NOTE: Headlights will not flash as part of the confirmation.
2. To Unlock Driver's Door Only: As you approach the vehicle, press button 1. Only the driver's door will unlock and the other doors will remain locked. Driver's door unlocking is confirmed with one electronic beep.
3. To Unlock All Doors: First press button 1 to unlock the driver's door, then press button 2 to unlock all of the passenger doors.
KEYLESS REMOTE CONTROLS:
- Hyundai supplies two remote controls with the Sonata Keyless Entry System.
- The remote control units are miniature radio transmitters powered by a 12-volt battery.
- If the battery in the keyless remote control has been discharged, the LED should not light up when either of the two buttons are pushed. Replace the battery by removing one screw and separating the remote housing.
Replacement battery Part No.00243-16150
- Typical remote control range is about 50 feet. Obstructions, electrical interference, weather conditions or a weak remote control battery will reduce the range.
- Extra remotes can be ordered by using Part No.00243-16110
