Shifter A/T: Service and Repair
AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE SHIFT CONTROL
REMOVAL
1. Remove the console upper cover plate and than remove the console upper cover.
2. Remove the floor console.
3. Remove the nut and washer.
4. Remove the control cable clip.
5. Remove the shift lever mounting bolts and the bulb connector.
6. Remove the shift lever assembly.
7. Remove the knob mounting screw.
8. Remove the selector knob.
9. Remove the indicator.
10. Remove the clip, flange nut from the transaxle sides.
11. Remove the transaxle control cable assembly.
12. Remove the shift lock cable and the key lock cable.
INSTALLATION
1. Apply a coating of the specified grease to the interior of the adjust bushing.
Specified grease: Chassis grease SAE J310, NLGI No.0
2. Move the shift lever and the transaxle range switch to the "N" position, and instal the transaxle control cable.
3. When connecting the control cable to the transaxle mounting bracket, install the clip until it contacts the control cable, in the position shown in the illustration.
4. When connecting the control cable to the shift lever mounting bracket, install the clip until it contacts the control cable.
5. Install the control cable, the key lock cable and the shift cable mounting bolt.
6. Install the indicator and the bulb connector.
7. Install the selector knob.
8. Install the shift lever assembly.
9. Install the nut and washer.
10. Install the console cover plate and upper cover.
SHIFT LEVER ASSEMBLY
INSPECTION
- Check the detent place for wear.
- Check the bushing for wear or damage.
- Check the spring for damage or deterioration.
- Check the pin at the end of the rod assembly for wear.
1. Install set procedure for lock cam.
(1) Move A/T lever to "P" position to set key lockcam and P-locks shown figure 2.
1) Check that key lock cam is located at "B" by detent pin.
2) Move P-lock cam to direction "A" and hold it with hand.
3) Turn set lever to direction "C" to move upward.
4) Fix locking pin portion of P-lock cam at notch of set lever.
2. Adjusting procedure for "P" shift lock and key lock cable.
(1) Check that each lock cam is shown in figure 2.
(2) Install shift lock cable and key lock cable in position. In this case, key lock cable must be fixed to key cylinder and shift lock cable must be fixed to brake pedal in position.
(3) Temporarily install each cable to A/T lever assemblies show in figure 3. Securely insert cable end into fixing pin of each cam.
(4) Press set lever lightly to direction "D" and fix P-lock cam securely.
(5) Doing the work of (4). Slightly pull outer casing of shift lock cable to direction "E" to stretch cable in this case. P-lock cam must not move.
(6) After checking portion of cable end touches cable fixing pin of P-lock cam. Fix outer casing with nut.
(7) Again check that cable end touches and fix inner casing with washer and snap pin.
(8) Slightly push key lock cam to direction "O".
(9) Doing the work of (8), slightly pull outer casing of key lock cable direction "G" to stretch cable. Then fix outer casing with nut.
(10) Push set lever into cable fixing pin of key lock cam. and fix inner casing with snap pin. In this case. P-lockcam must be fixed with shift lock cable as shown in figure 4.
3. Checking item of shift lock.
(1) With shift lever at P position and brake pedal not depressed. Push button cannot be operated (Shift lever can not be shifted to other positions from P). Push button can be operated at the positions except P.
(2) With IG key at the position other than "LOCK" (May be at "ACC" and brake pedal stroke 32 ± 5 mm (with shift lever at P position). Push button can be operated and shift lever can be shifted smoothly to other from P.
(3) With brake pedal not depressed shift lever can be shifted smoothly to "P" positions from other positions.
(4) Brake pedal must be operated smoothly without catching at all positions.
(5) With IG key at "LOCK" position and brake pedal depressed. Push button cannot be operated.
(6) IG. key must not turned to "LOCK" position.
(7) When shift lever shifted to "P" position again. IG key must be turned to "LOCK" position smoothly.
ASSEMBLY
1. Apply a coating of grease to the sliding part of the bushing.
Specified grease: Chassis grease SAE J310a, NLGI No.0
2. Apply the specified grease at the places shown in the figure.
Specified grease: Multipurpose grease SAE J310a, NLGI No.2
