Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Service Procedures

1. Read the supplied Material Safety Data Sheets (Item 9). Be aware of first aid measures, handling and storage information for materials included in the kit. For your own safety, wear the supplied safety glasses (Item 8) during the entire installation process.

2. Remove front and rear crossbar from vehicle roof rails.

3. Place front crossbar on flat surface and beginning at one end, remove the rubber buffer strip by peeling it away from bar.

4. Using the supplied towel (Item 7), wipe the underside of the buffer strip and the crossbar where the buffer strip was removed. Both areas should be free of moisture, dirt and grime.

5. Place buffer strip upside down next to crossbar.

6. Using the brush supplied in the container, and wearing the supplied protective rubber gloves (Item 6), apply the LOCTITE(R) 770 primer (Item 2) to the two flat surfaces of the underside of the buffer strip. Apply a thin coat along the entire length of the strip. The primer will dry almost immediately upon application.

7. Using the supplied masking tape (Item 5), mask off the adjacent exterior crossbar surfaces not covered by the installed buffer strip. Do not place any tape in buffer strip groove.

CAUTION:
ADHESIVE IS VERY AGGRESSIVE. USE CARE WHEN HANDLING. FUMES FROM ADHESIVE MAY CAUSE DIZZINESS. PERFORM INSTALLATION IN WELL-VENTILATED AREA.

8. Open the bottle of LOCTITE 401 instant adhesive (Item 1) and install applicator tip (Item 3) to top of bottle. Apply the LOCTITE 401 to the flat surfaces in crossbar groove as shown. Best results are obtained when adhesive is applied in 3/16" wide droplets placed every 1/2". Do not apply adhesive on last 2" of crossbar on either end.

NOTE:
If required, LOCTITE X-NMS clean up solvent can be used to remove adhesive from the buffer strip. It may be purchased at an industrial supply store or ordered online at www.loctite.com.

WARNING:
This solvent will damage the finish on the crossbars.

9. Place the buffer strip onto crossbar groove. After rubber strip contacts adhesive, you will only have approximately 20 seconds of working time before the adhesive will prevent buffer strip movement.

10. The buffer strip is not symmetrical. An identification groove is cut into front flap of the underside of the buffer strip. This flap should be Installed towards front of crossbar. Front of crossbar has a wider section.

11. Start at the center of the crossbar, push down buffer strip in center of rubber to engage hooks. You will feel a slight snap upon engagement. Slowly move towards right end of crossbar, pushing center of strip down as you proceed.

12. Repeat step 10 on left side of crossbar.

13. Push front and rear flap of buffer strip completely into groove over length of crossbar.

14. Using roller applicator (Item 4), roll entire length of crossbar, flattening any "humps" that may appear in buffer strip.

15. Inspect crossbar to ensure buffer strip is completely flat along entire length of bar. Repeat step 13 if necessary.

16. Remove masking tape.

17. Repeat steps 3 through 15 on rear crossbar.

18. Re-install crossbars on vehicle.

NOTE:
If new buffer strip is needed, reference Hyundai part numbers.
