Date: APRIL, 2004
Model: 2004 ELANTRA
Subject
VAPOR TUBE HOSE CLAMP POSITION
CAMPAIGN 067
This bulletin supersedes TSB # 04-01-004 to update production date information.
IMPORTANT:
DEALERS MUST PERFORM THIS CAMPAIGN ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES PRIOR TO CUSTOMER RETAIL DELIVERY AND WHENEVER AN AFFECTED VEHICLE IS IN THE SHOP FOR ANY MAINTENANCE OR REPAIR.
IMPORTANT:
WHEN A VEHICLE ARRIVES AT THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT, ACCESS HYUNDAI MOTOR AMERICA'S WARRANTY VEHICLE INFORMATION SCREEN VIA DCS INTERACTIVE OR DCS ON-LINE TO IDENTIFY OPEN CAMPAIGNS.
DESCRIPTION:
A vapor tube clamp that is located near the fuel tank may not be positioned properly. The spring-type hose clamp contains ears that are used to open the clamp during its installation. The vapor tube hose clamp ears should be directed outboard, not toward the fuel tank. If a vehicle contains a vapor tube hose clamp that is mispositioned so one of its ears is facing toward the fuel tank and that vehicle is involved in a severe high speed crash, the damage to the vehicle may cause the mispositioned clamp to damage the fuel tank.
This bulletin describes how to inspect the position of a vapor tube hose clamp, and if necessary, how to reposition it to prevent contact with the fuel tank. The vapor tube hose clamp is located in the opening between the front upper side of the fuel tank and underbody cross member as shown.
VEHICLES AFFECTED:
^ Model: Certain 2004 MY ELANTRA vehicles
^ Affected vehicle production date range: September 1, 2003 - April 14, 2004
SERVICE PROCEDURE:
NOTE:
Verify that the vehicle qualifies for this campaign by checking the "Warranty Vehicle Information" screen via DCS interactive or DCS Online.
VAPOR TUBE HOSE CLAMP INSPECTION:
1. Raise the vehicle. Locate the vapor tube hose clamp above the flange between the front upper and lower panels of the fuel tank and the body member as indicated.
2. Inspect the vapor tube hose clamp position.
If either of the clamp ears face towards the fuel tank, as shown, then go to the VAPOR TUBE HOSE CLAMP REPOSITIONING procedure following this section.
NOTE:
If the position of clamp ears on the vapor tube hose are not visible, inspect the clamp location by hand.
If both of the clamp ears are facing parallel to the tank as shown (ears towards the driver's side of the vehicle), or are facing forward, no further action is required. Lower the vehicle and complete service.
VAPOR HOSE CLAMP REPOSITIONING:
1. Using a 17 mm hand ratchet, loosen the passenger side fuel tank band bolt.
2. Loosen the passenger side fuel tank band bolt until the band is 1/2" from the mounting surface.
NOTE:
DO NOT REMOVE THIS BOLT COMPLETELY.
3. Using a 17 mm hand ratchet, loosen and remove the driver's side fuel tank band bolt.
4. The fuel tank straps should now look as shown with the passenger's side bolt loosened and the driver's side bolt removed.
5. With needle nose pliers, grip, loosen and turn the vapor hose clamp ears until they face parallel to the fuel tank, outwards towards the driver's side of the vehicle.
6. When completed, the vapor tube hose clamp position should look like this. The clamp ears are parallel to the fuel tank and facing towards the driver's side of the vehicle.
7. Reinstall the fuel tank band and tighten both bolts.
