2001-2004 SANTA FE 2.7L DAMPER CLUTCH SHUDDER AT 38-42 MPH TCM REPROGRAMMING INSTRUCTIONS
DESCRIPTION:
This bulletin provides a procedure to reprogram the transaxle control module (TCM) software in 2001-2004 MY Santa Fe vehicles with 2.7L engines using the Hi-Scan Pro.
The Santa Fe 2.7L TCM reprogramming provides the following refinement updates:
^ Damper clutch shudder reduced at approximately 38-42 mph
^ Reduced 2-3 shift flare during the first acceleration after a cold engine start
^ 1-2 and 2-3 shift quality improvement
^ Quicker adaptive learning while driving
^ Delayed shift feeling improved when the engine is cold
VEHICLES AFFECTED:
^ Model: 2001-2004 Santa Fe vehicles with 2.7L engines and automatic transaxles
^ Affected vehicle production date range: Produced through November 24, 2003
TCM SPECIFICATIONS:
TCM REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE:
CAUTIONS BEFORE REPROGRAMMING:
1. Conduct reprogramming with the ignition key in the "ON" position.
2. Be careful not to disconnect any cables connected to the vehicle or Hi-Scan Pro during reprogramming.
WARNING:
If reprogramming is interrupted, the manual update procedure must be used.
3. Do not start the engine during reprogramming.
4. Do not turn the ignition key OFF during reprogramming.
5. When the reprogramming is completed, turn OFF the ignition key for 20 seconds before starting the engine.
TCM REPROGRAMMING:
NOTE:
Verify that the vehicle is affected by identifying the vehicle production date and VIN.
1. Remove any software cards from the Hi-Scan Pro and insert reprogramming card into the Hi-Scan Pro top slot.
2. Connect the reprogramming adapter to the Hi-Scan Pro.
3. Connect the white 10 pin connector to the reprogramming adapter.
4. Connect power to the Hi-Scan Pro from the cigarette power adapter.
5. Insert the power cable from the reprogramming adapter into the cigarette power adapter.
6. Connect the cigarette power adapter into the vehicle cigarette power socket.
7. Connect the white 10 pin connector from the reprogramming adapter into the white reprogramming connector next to the DLC (Data Link Connector) located under the driver's side instrument panel.
8. Turn the ignition to the ON position.
9. Turn the Hi-Scan Pro ON.
10. Select option "40. SM 2.7D A/T SHIFT FEEL IMPROVEMENT" and press ENTER.
11. Select option "01. SM 2.7D A/T SHIFT FEEL [AUTO]" and press ENTER.
12. Enter "1229" as the password for automatic update and press ENTER.
13. The Hi-Scan Pro will establish communication.
14. The Hi-Scan Pro detects the current TCM ID and displays it for about 1 second.
15. The boot program will download first, then the main program and the interrupt vector program.
NOTE:
If the Hi-Scan Pro does not download the program, use the Manual Update Procedure following this section.
WARNING:
Do not interrupt the reprogramming at any time. The TCM will be rendered inoperative if the program does not download completely.
16. When the "REPROGRAMMING COMPLETED" message is displayed, the TCM reprogramming process is complete.
17. Turn the ignition to the OFF position for 20 seconds and then start the engine and check for proper operation.
18. Check for diagnostic trouble codes using the Hi-Scan Pro with the system software card. Erase all trouble codes.
MANUAL UPDATE PROCEDURE:
NOTE:
In the event that "01. SM 2.7D A/T SHIFT FEEL [AUTO]" fails to download the new TCM program, option "02. SM 2.7D A/T SHIFT FEEL [ERROR] must be used.
NOTE:
Confirm all connections are established as shown in the "AUTOMATIC UPDATE PROCEDURE" before continuing.
1. Turn the ignition to the ON position.
2. Turn the Hi-Scan Pro ON.
3. Select option "40. SM 2.7D A/T SHIFT FEEL IMPROVEMENT" and press ENTER.
4. Select option "02. SM 2.7D A/T SHIFT FEEL [ERROR]" and press ENTER.
5. Choose the vehicle type and TCM part number which is correct for your vehicle and press ENTER.
6. Select the correct password for the manual update mode which is correct for the vehicle specification by referring to the chart. Then press ENTER.
WARNING:
Be sure to input the correct password. If an incorrect password is selected, the correct program will not be downloaded.
7. The Hi-Scan Pro will establish communication.
NOTE:
Once the password is entered and accepted, the rest of the process is exactly the same as the automatic update procedure.
8. The Hi-Scan Pro will reprogram the TCM.
WARNING:
Do not interrupt the reprogramming at any time. The TCM will be rendered inoperative if the program does not download completely
9. The Hi-Scan Pro checks the TCM ID to confirm reprogramming is complete.
10. Turn the ignition to the OFF position for 20 seconds and then start the engine and check for proper operation.
11. Check for diagnostic trouble codes using the Hi-Scan Pro with the system software card. Erase all trouble codes.
EXPLANATION OF ERROR MESSAGE:
1. "INVALID PASSWORD": Please enter the exact password again.
2. "REPROGRAMMING ERROR, PLEASE WAIT FOR RETRY": An error occurred during reprogramming, the Hi-Scan Pro will retry the reprogramming automatically.
3. "ALREADY REPROGRAMMED" or "INCORRECT TARGET ID": This reprogramming has previously been done on this vehicle or the ECM/TCM is not the type subject for this reprogramming procedure.
4. "REPROGRAM ERROR, PLEASE CHECK THE SYSTEM": In this case, you must reprogram manually after selecting the menu option "02. SM 2.7D A/T SHIFT FEEL [ERROR]".
