Drivetrain - Bump/Jerk/4WD Binding Backing Up

TITLE: 4WD Electronic Control Module

APPLIES TO: Santa Fe 3.5L

SERVICE TIP:

Some Santa Fe 3.5L 4WD vehicles produced through December 15, 2003 may experience the following conditions:

^ Intermittent "bump/jerk" after the vehicle has stopped (this does not cause the vehicle to move)

^ Intermittent 4WD binding while backing out of a driveway

To correct these conditions, replace the 4WD electronic control module by following the procedure described in this bulletin.






PARTS INFORMATION:






^ Interchangeability:

^ No change in part number

^ The new part is identified with a date code (see artwork top of next column)






^ New part production start date = 2003/12/01 (any part manufactured after this date is a "NEW" part)


PROCEDURE:

NOTE: Verify that the vehicle is affected by identifying the vehicle production date range (through December 15, 2003).

1. Remove the key from the ignition.

CAUTION: The ignition key MUST be removed from the ignition to protect other electrical components near the 4WD module.

2. Open the driver's door.

3. Move the driver seat to the full forward position.

4. Open the left rear side door.






NOTE: For additional access to 4WD module, slit the carpet carefully as shown.

5. Locate the 4WD electronic control module under the driver's seat.






6. Disconnect the 4WD electronic control module (ECM) connector.









7. Remove the 4WD electronic control module mounting bolts (10mm, 2 each).

8. Remove the 4WD electronic control module from the vehicle.

9. Install the new 4WD electronic control module.

NOTE: Confirm that the new 4WD electronic control module was produced after 2003/12/01 (3Z01) by decoding the year, month and date information as described in the PARTS INFORMATION SECTION.

10. Install all parts in the reverse order of removal.
