Engine Controls - MIL ON/DTC P0111 Set
Group: ENGINE ELECTRICALNumber: 06-36-005
Date: AUGUST, 2006
Model:
2.0L TUCSON
Subject:
ECM REPROGRAMMING OF 2005-2006 TUCSON WITH MIL ILLUMINATION AND DTC P0111
DESCRIPTION:
Symptom/Condition:
^ Some 2005-2006 TUCSON (JM) vehicles equipped with the 2.0L engine may exhibit MIL illumination and DTC P0111 stored in ECM memory.
- P0111: Intake Air Temperature Circuit Range/Performance Problem
^ To resolve the above condition, the ECM should be reprogrammed using GDS.
^ The airflow sensor that includes the intake air sensor should NOT be replaced; the condition is not caused by a sensor diagnostic logic issue.
NOTE:
There are no performance issues associated with this condition.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
This TSB provides reprogramming instructions for GDS only. You may have to perform an initial internet update of GDS to receive this latest data item # 77:
If the vehicle had not been driven recently and was in storage for days; first start and run the engine for several minutes to assure it has a reasonably charged battery before conducting reprogramming. A low vehicle battery charge can prevent proper reprogramming.
VEHICLES AFFECTED:
^ Model: 2006 TUCSON vehicles with 2.0L engine
^ Affected vehicle production date range: 2005 and 2006 model year

GDS ECM REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE:
Important Cautions for Reprogramming:
^ Reprogramming by GDS can only be performed by using the USB cable between a laptop and the VCI; wireless cannot be used for reprogramming.
^ Make sure the GDS laptop battery indicator at the bottom right of the screen indicates at least 25% battery charge remaining to be able to complete reprogramming; if not, charge the laptop or keep the AC adaptor connected while reprogramming.
^ Perform reprogramming with the ignition key in the ON position.
^ Turn off all lights (do not leave headlight switch in auto mode) and all accessories (including heater/air conditioner/blower, radio, heated seat, rear defroster, etc.) to make certain the battery will not be discharged during reprogramming.
^ Be careful not to disconnect any cables connected to the vehicle during reprogramming.
^ Do not start the engine during reprogramming. Do not turn the ignition switch OFF during reprogramming.
1. Connect the GDS VCI module to the vehicles DLC connector and the USB cable between the VCI and GDS laptop's USB port.
2. Turn on vehicle ignition and make sure the green power LED is lit on the VCI; if it is not lit press on the power button of the VCI. Within a few seconds the GDS screen should indicate VCI: USB On in bright blue to the left of the VIN button on the screen.
NOTES:
You must have an internet connection to GDS to be able to receive any updated data; the bright blue Internet On should illuminate to the left of the VIN button.
If a GDS internet update is available, it could take up to several minutes to download and complete the update.
3. Make sure the GDS has the latest data by pressing the bottom right Internet Update button on the GDS screen. You will get a confirmation on the GDS screen if it is already updated (Refer to step below); otherwise the Download Start button will be viewable and should be pressed to update the GDS.
4. Press the VIN button at the top of the screen to launch the GDS VIN Search screen.
5. Press the VIN Auto Detect button to automatically read the vehicle's VIN (or you will need to manually enter vehicle, year, and engine if it does not automatically read this information) then enter Engine for system followed by the OK button.
6. Press the ECU Upgrade button on the screen shown.
7. In the left column of the ECU Upgrade screen shown select Auto Mode, followed by ENGINE, then the OK button.
8. The screen shown occurs as GDS is reading the present ECU ROM ID.
9. After the ECU ID is read, select Upgrade Event: 77 JM 2.0 BETA P0111 DTC IMPROVE and then press the UPGRADE button as shown in the screen.
10. Hit OK to confirm you are correctly the TSB instructions shown.
11. Reprogramming of the ECU will begin starting with this screen and gradually show the progress on the bar.
12. After a few minutes the progress bar will complete, but make sure to wait for the success confirmation pop-up screen that indicates reprogramming has been completed.
13. Key off ignition for 10 seconds then turn back on to reset the ECU.
14. Finally check that no incidental DTC have been created by the reprogramming and, if there are, that they don't return after being cleared. If they return after being cleared, follow the diagnostic directions for that DTC.
GDS MANUAL MODE (ERROR MODE) REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE:
Follow these steps in the event ECU reprogramming was not successful or did not complete using the above GDS Auto Mode reprogramming instructions:
1. Turn off the ignition key for 20 seconds and then turn it back on; this will assure the ECU is reset.
2. Within the ECU Upgrade screen in the left column select Manual Mode followed by ENGINE. Then select Upgrade Event: 77 JM 2.0L BETA P0111 DTC LOGIC IMPROVE.
3. Select System JM 2.0L-IMMO
4. Next enter the appropriate password from the table and then hit OK in the ECU Upgrade screen.
5. The reprogramming should begin and after a few minutes the progress bar will be filled.
6. Reprogramming has been completed successfully when the following confirmation pop-up screen appears:
7. Finally check that no incidental DTC have been created from the reprogramming and, if there are, that they don't return after being cleared. If they return after being cleared follow the diagnostic directions for that DTC.
