GDS ECU Software Reprogramming Procedure

GDS ECU SOFTWARE REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE:

Important Cautions for Reprogramming:
^ Reprogramming by GDS can only be performed by using the USB cable between a laptop and the VCI; wireless cannot be used for reprogramming.

^ Make sure the GDS laptop battery indicator at the bottom right of the screen indicates at least 25% battery charge remaining to be able to complete reprogramming; if not, charge the laptop or keep the AC adaptor connected while reprogramming.

^ Perform reprogramming with the ignition key in the ON position.

^ Turn off all lights (do not leave headlight switch in auto mode) and all accessories (including heater/air conditioner/blower, radio, heated seat, rear defroster, etc.) to make certain the battery will not be discharged during reprogramming.

^ Be careful not to disconnect any cables connected to the vehicle during reprogramming.

^ Do not start the engine during reprogramming.

^ Do not turn the ignition switch OFF during reprogramming.

1. Connect the GDS VCI module to the vehicle's DLC connector and the USB cable between the VCI and GDS laptop's USB port.

2. Turn on vehicle ignition and make sure the green power LED is lit on the VCI; if it is not lit press on the power button of the VCI. Within a few seconds, the GDS screen should indicate VCI:USB On in bright blue to the left of the VIN button on the screen.

NOTE:
You must have an internet connection to GDS to be able to receive any updated data; the bright blue "Internet On" should illuminate to the left of the VIN button.

NOTE:
If a GDS internet update is available, it could take up to several minutes to download and complete the update.

3. Make sure the GDS has the latest data by pressing the bottom right Internet Update button on the GDS screen. You will get a confirmation on the GDS screen if it is already updated (see next page); otherwise the Download Start button will be viewable and should be pressed to update the GDS.

4. Press the VIN button at the top of the screen to launch the GDS VIN search screen.

5. Press the VIN Auto Detect button to automatically read the vehicle's VIN (or you will need to manually enter vehicle, year, and engine if it does not automatically read this information) then press Engine Control for system followed by the OK button at the bottom of the screen.

6. Press the ECU Upgrade button on the following screen:

7. In the left column of the following ECU Upgrade screen select Auto Mode followed by BCM, then the OK button.

8. The following screen occurs as the GDS is reading the CURRENT ROM ID:

9. After the ECU ID is read make note of the current ROM ID in case the reprogramming does not complete in auto mode. If it does not reprogram automatically, you will need the ROM ID to perform a manual mode reprogram attempt.

10. The screen will automatically display Upgrade Event 144 EP HORN ANSWER BACK LOGIC UPDATE. Select the event and press the UPGRADE button as shown in the screen below.

11. The following screen will appear:

12. The battery voltage is verified to make sure it is at least 12 volts to ensure reliable update results. Click OK if the results indicate the voltage is OK.

NOTE:
If voltage is below 12 volts, click Cancel and then run the engine for several minutes to ensure an adequate battery charge state for reliable update results.

13. Update will begin and the progress of the update will appear on the bar graph.

NOTE:
If the reprogramming update is not allowed in the Auto Mode, go to "GDS Manual Mode (Error Mode) Reprogramming Procedure" to reprogram the IPM using the Manual Mode Reprogramming Procedure.

14. Update will occur until 100% is reached on the bar graph. Turn off the ignition power for a minimum of 10 seconds and then turn it back on. Click OK on the screen.

15. The reprogramming mode has been completed successfully when the following confirmation pop-up screen appears. Click the OK button.

16. Check that no incidental Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) have been created by the reprogramming and, if there are, that they don't return after being cleared. If they return after being cleared, follow the diagnostic directions for that DTC.

17. Log off from GDS and remove all GDS cables from the vehicle.

18. Start the engine to confirm proper operation of the vehicle.

19. Press the vehicle's keyless transmitter LOCK button two times to confirm the horn answer back operation.
