Service Procedure
CAUTIONS DURING REPROGRAMMING1. Make sure the battery has reasonable charge. If the vehicle has been in storage for several days, run the engine at idle for at least 10 minutes to ensure an adequate battery charge state for reliable reprogramming results.
2. Turn off all lights (Do not leave headlight switch in auto mode) and all accessories (including heater/air conditioner/blower, radio, heated seats, rear defroster, etc.) to make certain the battery will not be discharged during reprogramming.
3. Perform reprogramming with the ignition key in the ON position.
4. Be careful not to disconnect any cables connected to the vehicle or the GDS during reprogramming.
5. Do not start the engine during reprogramming.
6. Do not turn the ignition switch OFF during reprogramming.
TCM/ECM REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE:
GDS INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
WARNING:
Make sure that the battery symbol indicator at the bottom right tray of the GDS laptop shows at least 25% so there will be enough power to complete the reprogram; if it has less, charge the GDS laptop by connecting the power adaptor cable to it for at least 1/2 hour or leave it connected for the reprogram procedure if possible.
JM 2.7L:
1. Connect the 20-pin DLC cable (A) to the 16-pin DLC cable.
2. Connect the USB cable (B) to the VCI and GDS.
3. Connect the 20-pin connector to the OBD-II connector located in the engine compartment.
4. Turn the VCI on.
JM 2.0L:
1. Connect the USB cable (A) between the GDS and the VCI.
NOTE:
The USB cable is necessary because wireless communication is not available for the update.
2. Connect the 16-pin DLC connector from the VCI into the DLC located under the driver's side dash.
3. Turn the VCI on.
INTERNET UPDATE:
Confirm your GDS has Local Version 1.36 or higher. If not, complete the Internet Update according to the instructions on hmaservice.com.
AUTOMATIC REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE:
1. Enter the vehicle information manually by entering the vehicle, model year, and select AT. Select OK.
2. Select ECU Upgrade as shown above.
3. Select Auto Mode and AT under ECU Upgrade column. Select OK.
4. After selecting OK, the GDS will read the ROM ID as shown above.
5. After the Current ROM ID is displayed select the upgrade event.
^ Upgrade Event "100. JM 2.0 08MY TCU Update" for Tucson 2.0L
^ Upgrade Event "101. JM 2.7 08MY TCU Update" for Tucson 2.7L
6. Select OK at the next screen if the results indicate Voltage is OK.
7. The progress bar will indicate when reprogramming reaches 100%. Wait until the next screen indicates reprogramming is complete:
8. Turn the ignition switch OFF for at least 10 seconds then turn back ON to finish.
9. The GDS will confirm that TCU reprogramming is successfully finished.
10. Check for any engine or transmission Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) and erase any codes.
11. Turn the ignition switch OFF for about 20 seconds and then start the engine to confirm proper operation of the vehicle.
MANUAL REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE:
CAUTION:
^ Manual reprogramming must be performed only when automatic reprogramming fails.
^ If automatic reprogramming fails, turn the ignition switch OFF for about 20 seconds, turn the key to the ON position and then perform manual reprogramming.
^ Select Manual Mode and AT under ECU Upgrade column. Select OK:
^ Upgrade Event "100. JM 2.0 08MY TCU Update" for Tucson 2.0L
^ Upgrade Event "101. JM 2.7 08MY TCU Update" for Tucson 2.7L
12. Enter the appropriate Password from the above table and then select OK.
Perform the TCU update in accordance with the instructions shown on the GDS screen.
