WHINE NOISE / VIBRATION FROM TRANSFER CASE
This bulletin has been amended. Please discard earlier versions of this bulletin.
APPLIED VEHICLES:
2009 - 2010 FX35150 (S51) equipped with AWD
IF YOU CONFIRM
A whine noise and/or vibration from the transfer case assembly when:
^ Making right or left turns at slow speeds and/or
^ Stopped with steering wheel turned to almost full extent in either direction and then applying slight acceleration.
ACTIONS
1. Replace the electric controlled coupling in the transfer assembly.
NOTE:
Do not replace the entire transfer assembly for this incident should it occur.
2. For FX35 only built before the following VIN and date also replace the air breather vent.
^ FX35 built before JN8AS1 MW(*)AM 851594 and October 27 2009.
IMPORTANT:
The purpose of ACTIONS (above) is to give you a quick idea of the work you will be performing. You MUST closely follow the entire Service Procedure as it contains information that is essential to successfully completing this repair.
PARTS INFORMATION
CAUTION:
Use only Genuine NISSAN Matic J. Do not mix with other fluids. Using transmission fluid other than Genuine NISSAN Matic J or its equivalent may cause deterioration in drivability and transfer assembly durability and may damage the transfer case assembly.
CLAIMS INFORMATION
Submit a Primary Part (PP) type line claim using the claims coding shown.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
Replace Electric Controlled Coupling
1. Remove the transfer assembly from the vehicle and place it in a clean working area.
^ Refer to Section DLN in the Service Manual for removal information.
2. Disassemble the transfer assembly and replace the electric controlled coupling.
^ Refer to Section DLN in the Service Manual for replacement (disassembly and reassembly) information.
NOTE:
The following are helpful tips for coupling replacement.
The drive chain front drive shaft main shaft and coupler assembly are removed together:
Use a rubber mallet to tap on the rear of the main shaft while pulling outward on the front drive shaft.
NOTE:
Move the front drive shaft and the main shaft alternately a little at a time.
The following do not need to be disassembled / replaced as part of the coupler replacement.
^ Front drive shaft (bearings and plug)
^ Oil pump
^ Companion flange (rear bearing, snap ring, spacer and rear oil seal)
^ Breather tube
^ Front case (main shaft bearing, snap rings, main shaft oil seal front oil seal spacer).
NOTE:
Make sure to use Anaerobic Liquid Gasket to reseal (reassemble) the case.
^ Permatex(R) 51813 Anaerobic Gasket Maker or equivalent (Local Source).
Replace Air Breather Vent (FX35 only built before JN8AS1 MW(*)AM 851594 and October 27, 2009)
1. Replace the air breather vent.
^ Refer to On Vehicle Repair > Air Breather Hose in section TM of the Service Manual for replacement information.
^ Use the new air breather vent listed in the parts information.
^ Mount the new breather in the new location using the existing bell housing bolt as shown below.
^ Torque bolt to 75 N.m (7.7 Kg-m 55 ft.lb)
NOTE:
The old breather vent is bolted/attached at the water crossover tube on the rear of the engine. The new breather tube will be bolted/attached to the back of the transmission bell housing.
CAUTION:
^ When inserting an air breather hose to the air breather vent be sure to inset it fully until its end reaches the radius curve.
^ When installing the air breather hose be careful not to crush or block the hose by bending or folding the hose.
^ For the A/T air breather hose insert it on the air breather vent so the paint mark is facing upward.
^ Ensure clips are securely installed to the brackets when installing air breather hose to brackets.
^ Make sure tube open ends are behind bracket as shown in Figure 4.
^ Make sure tube open ends are behind bracket as shown in Figure 4.
