Ignition Coil

Fig. 1 Checking Coil Resistance:

2.0L/4-121.7 (4ZC1-T) Engine
1. Check outer face of ignition coil for cracking, rusting or damage to socket area.
2. Check resistance of primary and secondary coil as shown in Fig. 1. Primary coil resistance should be 1.130--1.529 ohms. Secondary coil resistance should be 10,200--13,800 ohms.
3. If measured resistance is not as specified in step 2, replace coil assembly.
4. Check insulator resistance as shown in Fig. 1. Insulation resistance should be 10 megohms or more.
5. If measured resistance is not as specified in step 4 or if tester needle deflects slightly, replace coil assembly.

Except 2.0L/4-121.7 (4ZC1-T), 2.3L/4-138 (4ZD1) & 2.6L/4-155 (4ZE1) Engines
1. Measure resistance as shown in Fig. 2, reading should be infinite.
2. Measure resistance as shown in Fig. 3, reading should be zero.
3. Measure resistance as shown in Fig. 4, reading should be infinite.
4. If resistance is not as specified, replace coil.

Fig. 5 Checking Coil Resistance:

2.3L/4-138 (4ZD1) & 2.6L/4-155 (4ZE1) Engines
1. Check outer face of ignition coil for cracking, rusting or damage to socket area.
2. Check resistance of primary coil (A-C) and secondary coil (A-B) as shown in Fig. 5. Primary coil resistance should be 0.9 ohms. Secondary coil resistance should be 9,400 ohms.
3. If measured resistance is not as specified in step 2, replace coil assembly.
4. Check insulator resistance (A-body) as shown in Fig. 1. Insulation resistance should be 10 megohms or more.
5. If measured resistance is not as specified in step 4, replace coil assembly.
