Parking Brake System: Adjustments
With Rear Drum Brakes1. Move parking brake handle to its fully released position.
2. Loosen the adjusting nut and the locknut. Parking cable must be loosened sufficiently. (Loosen the adjust nut and the lock nut.)
3. Start engine, and apply the brake pedal firmly. Apply brakes several times in order that the rear brake auto-adjuster completes the function.
4. Stop engine, Then raise and support vehicle.
5. Remove wheel and tire assembly.
6. Measure the inner diameter of drum, then diameter of brake shoes. Clearance should be .0098-.0157 inch. If incorrect, repair or replace the brake auto-adjusters as necessary.
7. Firmly grasp the second relay lever rod. Rotate the adjusting nut until all slack disappears from the cable. The clearance between the parking brake lever of the disc brake and the stopper pin must be within 2.0 mm (0.08 in.). Tighten the adjusting nut.
8. Pull the parking brake handle to its fully set position three or four times. Apply 66 lbs of force.
9. If the parking brake is properly adjusted, the traveling range between the fully disengaged position and fully engaged position will be between 9 and 11 notches of the parking brake handle rachet.
10. If the travel range is not as specified, repeat Steps 1 through 7.
11. Check the rear wheel by turning by hand for smooth rotation without brake drag.
12. Check to see if there is any parking brake cable slack, and if the clearance between the parking lever of the disc brake and the stopper pin is within the limits noted above in step 7. If slack is apparent, or if the clearance is not within these limits, again repeat steps 1 through 11.
