ISSUE DATE:

GROUP:
STEERING

1995.5-97 RODEO (UC) INSTRUMENT HARNESS CHAFING/DAMAGE AT STEERING REINFORCEMENT

AFFECTED VEHICLES

1995.5-97 Rodeo (UC) models.

SERVICE INFORMATION

Some affected vehicles may experience all or some of the following conditions:

^ Instrument meter cluster, key reminder buzzer, rear defogger, etc., performance may be reduced.

^ The radio may not operate properly; the speakers may make a popping/crackling noise.

^ One or more indicator lights may remain constantly lit.

This condition may be the result of damaged wiring in the instrument harness caused by chafing of the harness with the adjacent steering reinforcement. The steering reinforcement is made of metal and has a sharp edge to it which can cut through the instrument harness sheath and damage the wiring bundle inside.

To repair this condition(s), inspect the instrument harness for evidence of chafing/damage, and repair or replace the harness, as appropriate. Then, as a preventive measure, affix a piece of single-sided tape (e.g., duct, electrical, masking) across the entire sharp edged length of the steering reinforcement. When all repairs are completed, check affected items (e.g., instrument meter cluster, indicator lights, radio/speakers, etc.) for proper operation.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Instrument Meter Cluster

^ Remove instrument meter cluster from instrument panel in accordance with Section 8 of appropriate Workshop Manual.

INSPECT

^ Affix piece of single-sided tape (e.g., duct, electrical, masking) along entire sharp edged length of steering reinforcement (Figure 1).

2. Instrument Meter Cluster
