Case Assemble

TOOLS REQUIRED
^ J-21784 Differential Side Bearing Installer
^ J-8092 Driver Handle
^ J-39830 Differential Side Bearing Remover Plug
^ Or Equivalent

NOTE: Lubricate all parts with rear axle lubricant.

1. Side gear thrust washers (16) to the side gears (15). If the exciter ring (36) was removed, install the new exciter ring onto the differential case by pressing using the ring gear as a pilot.
2. Side gears (15) to the differential case (14). Place the side gears in place on the same side as removed.
3. Pinion gears (15) to the differential without the thrust washers (17):
a. Place one pinion gear into the side gears and rotate the gears until the pinion is exactly opposite from the differential opening.
b. Place the second pinion gear onto the side gears so that the pinion gear holes line up.
c. Rotate the pinion gears into place, and verify that the pinion gears line up with pinion shaft holes.
4. Pinion thrust washers (17). Rotate the pinion gears toward the differential opening just enough to slide in the pinion thrust washers.
5. Pinion shaft (18).
6. Roll pin. Peen some metal of the case over the pin in two places 180 degrees apart.

NOTE: Start 90 degrees from roll pin slot.

7. Ring gear (27) to the differential case (14).
8. New ring gear bolts (20). Tighten the ring gear bolts alternately in stages, gradually pulling the ring gear onto the differential case. Tighten the ring gear bolts in sequence.
