Compressor Replacement

Compressor Replacement

Tools Required
J 39400-A Halogen Leak Detector

Removal Procedure
1. Recover the refrigerant. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging.
2. Remove the cooling fan and shroud.
3. Remove the air conditioning (A/C) drive belt.
4. Remove the nut from the compressor hose assembly at the compressor.
5. Remove the compressor hose assembly from the A/C compressor.
6. Discard the sealing washers. Cap all of the openings.
7. Remove the lower coolant hose.
8. Remove the nut retaining the compressor hose to the condenser.
9. Remove the compressor hose from the condenser.
10. Disconnect the electrical connections.
11. Remove the nut retaining the compressor hose to the accumulator.
12. Remove the compressor hose from the accumulator.
13. Reposition the heater pipe clamps at the water pump,
14. Remove the heater pipes from the water pump.
15. Remove the upper A/C compressor mounting bracket bolts.
16. Remove the lower A/C compressor mounting bracket bolts. The accessory drive belt tensioner will be removed with one of the bolts.
17. Remove the A/C compressor from the bracket.
18. If replacing the A/C compressor. Refer to Compressor Oil Balancing.

Installation Procedure
1. Add the proper amount of PAG oil to the compressor crankcase. Refer to Refrigerant System Capacities.
2. Install the A/C compressor to the bracket.
3. Install the accessory drive belt tensioner to the compressor mounting bracket
4. Install the compressor.
5. Install the lower A/C compressor mounting bracket bolts.

NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.

6. Install the A/C compressor mounting bolts.

Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 50 Nm (37 lb ft).

7. Connect the electrical connector to the A/C compressor.
8. Install the upper A/C compressor mounting bracket bolts.

Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 50 Nm (37 lb ft).

9. Install the heater pipes to the water pump.
10. Reposition the clamps.
11. Install the compressor hose to the accumulator using new sealing washers.
12. Install the retaining nut to the accumulator.

Tighten
Tighten the nut to 30 Nm (22 lb ft).

13. Install the compressor hose to the condenser using new sealing washers.

Tighten
Tighten the nut to 30 Nm (22 lb ft).

14. Install the lower coolant hose.
15. Install the A/C drive belt.
16. Install the engine drive belt.
17. Install the compressor hose to the compressor.
18. Install the retaining nut the the compressor.

Tighten
Tighten the nut to 30 Nm (22 lb ft).

19. Install the fan and shroud.
20. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System in Cooling System.
21. Evacuate and recharge the A/C system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging.
22. Leak test the fittings of the component using the J 39400-A.
